Ok, I get it, I’m a Nikon shooter. A decent Nikon mirrorless camera (finally) is a big deal. But I am starting to get a little sick of the hype already. We’ve had rumours, leaks, a teaser and a sort-of-not-really-an-announcement announcement.

Well, now, we’ve got an official announcement letting us know when there’ll be an official announcement. The rumoured date of August 23rd is now set in stone, according to an email I received from Nikon this morning. At midnight Eastern, 9pm Pacific, or a crazy 5am here in the UK, we’ll finally hear what Nikon have to offer.

Ok, so I am a little excited about this announcement. Mostly because I’m hoping that a lot of people will jump on the mirrorless bandwagon, flood the market with used DSLRs, and I’ll pick up a couple of bargains.

I am also interested in seeing how well the new Nikon mirrorless might hold up against the likes of Sony, though, too. Nikon doesn’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to mirrorless, so I’m curious to see if they’ve actually learned from their mistakes with the Nikon 1 system.

To be honest, I think it’s too little, too late. It certainly is for me. I’d already been considering switching to something else since the Sony A7III was announced. For stills, my Nikon DSLRs aren’t really lacking. They already do me everything I need. But where I need more capability is video, and that’s where Sony fit in. My plan to switch to Sony was pretty much scrapped, though, as soon as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was announced.

Chances are I’ll be sticking with the Nikon DSLRs. After all, they give me everything I need already for photography, so why replace them if I don’t have to? And I can’t imagine Nikon will beat out the Pocket 4K when it comes to video (except for the sensor size, obviously, which isn’t really a big concern).

But how about you? Are you still excited for Nikon mirrorless? Are sick of hearing about it? Will you get one? Have you already dumped Nikon or will you stick with them? What do you want to see in a Nikon mirrorless camera?
