Sony RX10 V: $2,298 Camera for a Solo Creator’s Every Need

Sony has finally pulled the curtain on the RX10 V, the long-awaited successor to the RX10 IV – a camera that’s been a cult favorite among wildlife photographers, travel shooters, and solo video creators for years. The new model keeps the same core concept: a premium fixed-lens superzoom built around a 1″ stacked sensor and a Zeiss 24–600mm equivalent lens, now supercharged with AI-powered autofocus, upgraded video specs, and a much bigger battery. Whether that’s enough to justify the $2,298 price tag depends entirely on what you’re shooting.

The RX10 V runs on a 20.1MP 1″ stacked CMOS sensor, Sony’s BIONZ XR processor, and a dedicated AI unit – together they enable 30 fps blackout-free shooting with full AF/AE tracking, plus Real-Time Recognition AF that locks onto humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and aircraft. For solo wildlife or sports shooters, that’s tracking power a fixed-lens camera has no business having.

The lens is still the headline: a 24–600mm f/2.4–4.0 Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* with 25x zoom and optical stabilization, now steadier at telephoto thanks to a new gyro sensor and updated IS algorithms. The macro range deserves more credit than it gets, too – 1.18″ at 24mm, 28.3″ at 600mm, so close-up shooting works across the whole zoom, not just at one end.

Video-wise, the Sony RX10 V offers uncropped 4K up to 60fps with 5.4K oversampling, 10-bit 4:2:2, S-Log3, S-Cinetone, and 16 user LUTs. 4K120 exists but crops the sensor, so know that going in. AI Auto Framing (auto-reframing to keep your subject centered in static shots) is a love-it-or-ignore-it tool. For run-and-gun solo creators, I’d call it clever. My only complaint is that it still one UHS-II card slot.

Battery life finally gets fixed – the NP-FZ100 (same as Sony’s Alpha line) delivers ~630 shots per charge, over 50% more than the RX10 IV. Add a redesigned grip, updated multi-selector, dedicated AF-On button, and a 3.69M-dot OLED EVF at 0.78x, and you’ve got a body that feels refined without losing what made the original good.
