ZWO Launches Seestar S50 Pro: The Next Evolution of Smart Astrophotography

Smart telescopes have changed how many astrophotographers are approaching astrophotography. For the last few years, we have been seeing a steady growth in both the smart telescope world and its user base. ZWO launched its first smart telescope. The S50 back in April 2023. A year and a half later, the line-up was extended with the Seestar S30, being launched in November 2024. Earlier this year, in January 2026, the S30 Pro came out with major upgrades. Looking at the progression, things have been exciting.
The exciting times are back again! ZWO has announced its latest smart telescope offering: the Seestar S50 Pro. The telescope combines the optical power of a 50mm aperture with the “pro” features of an S30 Pro. And as expected, they have taken things a little further.
Seestar S50 Pro: The sensor and the optics
The Seestar S50 Pro is a well-balanced mix of the S50 and S30 Pro. The S50 Pro uses a four-element APO optical design with a 50mm aperture and 260mm focal length. It has dual 4K cameras sitting inside. Its main telephoto camera has a 1/1.2-inch sensor and an 8.29-megapixel resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. A second 1/2-inch camera provides the same 8.29-megapixel resolution but covers a much wider 63-degree field of view.
The S50 Pro retains the 50mm aperture of the original S50, but ZWO has increased the focal length from 250mm to 260mm and moved to a four-element APO design. That means a reduction of the focal ratio from f/5 of the S50 to f/5.2. This could give you sharper and rounder stars while also reducing chromatic aberration.
Two Cameras: Double the fun
In the initial phase, smart telescopes were meant for deep-sky astrophotography. A single lens system with a single sensor did the job. Things have changed since then. With the S30 Pro, we saw a dual-lens and dual-sensor system being integrated into the smart telescope body. This extended its appeal to nightscape photographers.

The addition of a wide-angle camera in the S50 Pro is one of the biggest departures from the original S50. ZWO has fitted the S50 Pro with a separate 1/2-inch sensor that also records 3840 × 2160-pixel images. The wide-angle camera supports autofocus, and the S50 Pro can perform live stacking through this camera.
The wide-angle system is aimed at subjects that need a much larger field. This lets you do Milky Way photography, star trails, and night-sky timelapses. It can also be used for scenery, giving the telescope a role outside conventional astronomical imaging. All of these can be done through the Seestar mobile app.
Nine hours of battery life
The S50 Pro also gets a much larger battery than the original model. Its 10,000mAh battery has a capacity of 4,000mAh more than the 6,000mAh unit in the S50 and S30 Pro.
ZWO now quotes up to nine hours of astrophotography operation. This figure comes from laboratory testing at an ambient temperature above 10°C, with the telephoto camera operating in Alt-Azimuth mode during live-stacking observations. While these are ideal situations, it could also mean that a fully charged S50 Pro could take you through a whole night’s session without the need for an external power source.
The updated runtime is also linked to software optimization. According to ZWO, the newly updated Seestar App version 3.3.1 includes changes that support extended battery life.
Better tracking and image processing
ZWO has added a zero-backlash precision drive system in the S50 Pro. According to them, the design improves tracking stability and resistance to wind. It also supports equatorial mode, where the improved mechanical stability can increase imaging efficiency.
ZWO has also expanded the processing tools available within the Seestar system. The S50 Pro includes star removal, star reduction, and noise reduction, along with tools for cropping, rotating, and optimizing images. The smart telescope also supports automatic dynamic background extraction, or DBE. The feature is designed to equalize the background and improve image uniformity.
For users who want to analyze images, the S50 Pro supports astronomical photometry workflows. ZWO has also added telescope networking features that allow remote device sharing and management. Users can transfer control of a telescope between people through the network system.
While adding some of these new features, the S50 Pro retains older features like mosaic imaging, NFC pairing, and automatic go-to features.

Price and availability
The new Seestar S50 Pro has been priced at $999 (€999). But the good news is that the pre-order pricing has been kept at $899/€999. This discounted pricing will be available till September 15, 2026. For pricing reference, the original S50 was listed at $549, while the S30 Pro costs $699.
You can pre-order the Seestar S50 Pro starting today, August 25, 2026. The first batch of shipments is expected to begin on September 1, 2026.
The S50 Pro package will contain the smart telescope, a protective case, a solar filter, a USB Type-C cable, a carbon fiber tripod, and stickers.
