Sony’s FX5 Is Delayed as Company Rechecks Camera Before Launch

Sony’s FX5 was supposed to be the smaller sibling to its popular cinema cameras, but photographers and filmmakers waiting to buy one will have to wait a little longer. 

Retailers including Adorama have emailed customers to say that Sony is taking additional time to complete quality verification and improve its manufacturing process before the camera goes on sale.

The retailer notice does not give a new launch date. Sony says it will provide an update once the timing of the sales launch has been confirmed.

What are the Sony FX5 specs?

Sony announced the FX5 as a compact full frame cinema camera aimed at filmmakers and content creators who want a smaller body without moving away from Sony’s Cinema Line.

The camera uses a 35mm full frame sensor with approximately 102 megapixels of total resolution and an effective resolution of around 12.9 megapixels. Its design supports high sensitivity shooting, with an expanded ISO range reaching 409600.

For video, the FX5 can record 4K footage at up to 120 frames per second. It also supports 10 bit 4:2:2 recording and Sony’s S Cinetone color profile, along with S Log3 for filmmakers who want more flexibility during grading.

Autofocus is another major part of the camera. The FX5 includes Sony’s subject recognition and tracking features, making it suitable for solo operators who may not have someone available to pull focus.

The compact body also has built in image stabilization, which is particularly useful for handheld filmmaking. Sony designed the camera around a modular setup, allowing users to build it into different rigs depending on the production.

When will the FX5 actually arrive?

For now, Sony is keeping the new launch schedule open.

That may be frustrating for customers who have already received notifications about the camera or placed orders, but a manufacturing delay also means Sony is choosing to hold the product rather than release units before its quality checks are complete.

For now, though, filmmakers interested in the FX5 will have to keep their rigs on standby. The next announcement from Sony may be less about another feature and more about finally telling everyone when they can buy one.
