Sigma’s 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary is a compact full-frame zoom aimed at photographers who want one versatile lens they can live with all day. It covers a genuinely useful range – from wide enough for landscapes and interiors to a normal field of view for portraits and street – all in a 13.2 oz package. Available now for Sony E and L mount at $849.

The optical formula is 15 elements in 13 groups, with three SLD and three aspherical elements doing the heavy lifting against aberrations. Edge-to-edge sharpness throughout a zoom range is always the hard part, and Sigma’s betting the DG Contemporary delivers. The HLA autofocus motor should keep up with both stills and video, and Sigma has specifically optimized the design to suppress focus breathing – a detail video shooters will appreciate.

A 6.2″ minimum focus at 28mm and a 1:2.3 reproduction ratio at 35mm edges this into near-macro territory, which is rare for a wide zoom. That alone makes this lens more interesting than a typical travel zoom.

The variable aperture is worth noting though. You’re getting f/2.8 only at 20mm – zoom in and it steps down to f/4. For a lens pitched partly at low-light shooting, that’s a real limitation once you move past the wide end. A major downside for me is the lack of optical image stabilization, especially given the video-friendly positioning. You’ll want to rely on in-body IS or a gimbal.

At 2.8 x 3.5 inches with dust and splash resistance and a 67mm filter thread, the practical case for this lens on a travel or hybrid kit is easy to make. It’s not a do-everything lens, but it’s close.
