Insta360 Luna Pro Could Replace Half Your Creator Bag

At some point, a “small creator setup” stops being small. Add a camera, gimbal, microphone, monitor, batteries, and a few filters to your bag, and you might as well start looking for a camera assistant. 

Insta360 is taking a different approach with the Luna Pro, a 215g gimbal camera that packs a 1 inch Leica sensor, 8K video, and three axis stabilization into one remarkably small package.

Launched on September 10, the Insta360 Luna Pro starts at $599.99. It sits below the dual lens Luna Ultra, but its single lens design is aimed at creators who want a simpler setup for vlogging, travel, and everyday video.

A serious sensor in a tiny camera

The Luna Pro’s main attraction is its 1 inch Leica sensor, which can record 8K video at 30fps and 4K at up to 120fps.

That gives the camera considerably more resolution than most compact creator cameras, while the larger sensor gives Insta360 a stronger foundation for image quality. The camera can also record 4K vertical video at 30fps, avoiding the need to crop horizontal footage for social media.

Three Leica color profiles and six cinematic filters provide additional options for the appearance of the footage.

Physical stabilization comes from a three axis gimbal, while Deep Track 5.0 can track a selected subject and keep it in frame. For someone filming themselves, that combination can eliminate some of the equipment normally needed to get stable footage while moving.

Designed for people filming themselves

The Luna Pro also has a few features aimed specifically at solo shooting. Its detachable 2 inch OLED touchscreen can be used for framing and camera control, while also functioning as a wireless remote and microphone.

The screen can communicate with the camera from up to 10 meters, giving creators more freedom to place the camera away from themselves while still monitoring the shot.

Insta360 also offers accessories including a wide angle lens, ND filter set, Black Mist filter, battery handle, neck mount, POV head tracker and mini fill light.

Battery life is rated at up to four hours under specified test conditions, with fast charging capable of reaching approximately 80 percent in 23 minutes. Actual battery life will depend on settings such as resolution, frame rate, stabilization and screen use.

How much gear can one camera replace?

The Luna Pro starts to make more sense when compared with the equipment that normally surrounds a camera.

A creator could easily end up carrying a camera, gimbal, monitor, microphone and several accessories just to produce a simple walking vlog or travel video. The Luna Pro does not replace all of those things in every situation, but it puts several of them into a single 215g device.

That is also where the camera’s $599.99 price becomes interesting. It is not just competing with other dedicated cameras. It is competing with smartphones, which have become extremely capable video tools in their own right.

The Luna Pro’s answer is to offer a 1 inch sensor, physical three axis stabilization, 8K recording and subject tracking in a camera designed specifically for video creation.

The $769.99 Luna Ultra goes further with a dual lens system, but the Pro is arguably the more straightforward option for creators who do not need multiple perspectives.

The interesting question is no longer how much camera Insta360 managed to fit into 215g. It is how much of the usual camera bag you can leave at home.
