Sony Launches 400mm f/4.5 and 600mm f/6.3 GM Lenses: Start at $2,698, Built for Handheld Shooting

Sony has just announced two new G Master primes for the FE mount: the FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS. Both lenses are built around the same core philosophy – bring serious super-telephoto reach to photographers who want to shoot handheld without straining their arms and back. At 2.2 lb each, they’re remarkably light for their respective focal lengths. As you can probably guess, Sony is positioning them squarely at wildlife photographers and sports shooters. Let’s see what each of them packs.

FE 600mm f/6.3 GM OSS

The headline story with the 600mm is the size-to-reach ratio. At 10.4 inches long and 2.2 lb, it’s 4.5 lb lighter and 8.2 inches shorter than Sony’s existing FE 600mm f/4 GM. You can throw it in a hiking pack or carry it on a sideline without your arm giving out by noon. The tradeoff is the f/6.3 maximum aperture, which is noticeably narrower than the f/4. But paired with the OSS and modern high-ISO performance on Sony bodies, it’s a compromise most shooters will likely make.

Autofocus is handled by dual XD linear motors, which Sony says support continuous shooting up to 120 fps. It’s a great addition for when you’re tracking a bird in flight or a sprinting athlete. The OSS system offers three modes covering standard shooting, panning, and moving subjects, and a focus range limiter plus four focus hold buttons give you the kind of hands-on control.

Optically, Super ED and ED elements take care of chromatic aberration. The 11-blade rounded diaphragm should produce the kind of smooth, circular bokeh that makes your subject pop at this focal length. There’s also a fluorine-coated front element, dust and moisture sealing, and a removable tripod foot. Teleconverter compatibility is also there – the 1.4x brings you to 840mm f/8, and the 2.0x takes you all the way to 1200mm f/11, both with full AF retained.

FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS

The 400mm f/4.5 tells a very similar story, just at a slightly more accessible focal length. Compared to the FE 400mm f/2.8 GM, this new lens is 4.2 lb lighter and 4.6 inches shorter. The f/4.5 aperture won’t satisfy everyone who needs that f/2.8 light-gathering for indoor arenas or low-light wildlife, and that’s, once again, worth acknowledging. But for outdoor sports and wildlife in decent light, f/4.5 combined with OSS and a fast Sony body is still a very capable combination.

The optical and mechanical specs mirror the 600mm almost exactly: dual XD linear motors, 120 fps continuous AF support, three-mode OSS, 11-blade aperture, Super ED elements, Nano AR Coating II, and the same 95mm front filter thread. I believe the decision to keep both lenses at the same diameter, weight, and overall handling profile was deliberate. If you own one and pick up the other, you’ll feel right at home immediately. The removable tripod foot is a nice touch for handheld-first shooters who don’t want the extra bulk, and the teleconverters push the focal length to 560mm f/6.3 or 800mm f/8 when you need more reach.
