Insta360 launches Antigravity Drones

When it comes to long overdue announcements, I think this one ranks quite highly. For years, people have been hoping that Insta360 would get into the drone market, and now it’s finally happening.

Today Insta360 has announced the launch of their new drone brand, Antigravity. As one would expect from a company like Insta360, though, they’re not just recreating the same drones that DJI and others have made. Oh no, they’re going to be producing 360° drones.

While there are no actual drones being announced just yet, Antigravity is launching with a bold but clear mission to “to redefine aerial exploration and storytelling”. And if anyone can do it, it’s Insta360. Having already taken the lead in the 360 camera market, they’ve also made a significant dent in GoPro’s formerly-monopolised action camera market. Can they do the same for drones and take on DJI?

Antigravity — and its upcoming first product — launches at a pivotal moment when hardware, software, and user expectations have finally aligned. After years of quiet development, the technology is ready to support a new kind of drone experience. This drone is set to revolutionize the industry, introducing several world-firsts in drone design that enable pilots to experience and capture the world in ways that weren’t possible before.

The drone has been designed to reflect Antigravity’s commitment to building a product ecosystem with unique personality, meaningful features, and a clear sense of purpose. To ensure that Antigravity drones are used solely for exploration and storytelling, all drones will include smart safety features such as payload detection to prevent misuse or unauthorized modifications.

– Antigravity Press Release

Speaking of DJI… It’s interesting that Insta360 is making this announcement right now, given that DJI begins teasing that they’re getting into the 360 camera market. DJI’s 360 camera has been in the works for a while, but it doesn’t seem that much different from what’s already available today.

Antigravity, on the other hand, is taking a different approach with its Antigravity drones. Instead of just churning out DJI copies, the company states that they’re planning to release “the world’s first 360 drone with true immersive capture”. And while they haven’t released a lot of information about it yet, they have mentioned a few specs. They’ve also posted an impressive looking launch video.

Their upcoming first drone will offer 8K resolution with a 360-degree field of view, which I think we can expect to be at least on par with the Insta360 X5. It’s also going to be a sub-250g drone, allowing for greater freedom over how and where you can fly it. And as 360-degree video is a core design element of the drone, it should be much more effective than past efforts to retrofit 360-degree cameras onto existing drones.

The new drone is expected to be launched in August, the company says. So, we don’t have long to wait to find out the rest of the details, and exactly what it can do. Until then, you can find out more on the Antigravity website.
