For years, travel-friendly star trackers have followed the same formula. They are compact, lightweight, and easy to carry. They also work well with wide-angle lenses. However, once astrophotographers begin using heavier telephoto lenses or small telescopes, these trackers often start to struggle. Photographers who wanted more accurate tracking usually had only one option. They had to step up to a much larger equatorial mount.

To bridge the gap, Move Shoot Move (MSM) has introduced the Nomad Harmonic I, a compact star tracker that replaces the traditional worm gear with a harmonic drive. It is a technology that has become increasingly popular in premium astronomical mounts because of its compact design, high torque, and reduced mechanical backlash.

The Nomad Harmonic I resembles many compact star trackers already on the market. It is small enough to fit inside a camera bag and simple enough to set up in the field. The biggest difference lies inside the mount. The tracker uses a 14:1 harmonic drive. This drive system has become increasingly common in larger telescope mounts because it packs high torque into a compact mechanism while reducing backlash.

The use of a harmonic drive also allows the tracker to support heavier imaging equipment without becoming significantly larger. According to Move Shoot Move, the Nomad Harmonic I can carry payloads of up to 5 kilograms, making it suitable for mirrorless cameras, DSLRs, telephoto lenses, and compact refractor telescopes. The tracker also supports an optional counterweight for improved balance when using heavier equipment.

While harmonic drive technology is no longer new in astronomy, it has rarely appeared in products this compact. That makes the Nomad Harmonic I one of the more interesting releases in the travel astrophotography market.

Looking beyond wide-angle lenses

Traditional travel trackers excel with lenses between 14mm and 135mm. Many can also handle 200mm under favorable conditions. Beyond that point, tracking becomes much less forgiving. A slight alignment error or a small mechanical imperfection can quickly produce elongated stars.

Move Shoot Move has designed the Nomad Harmonic I with longer focal lengths in mind. The company says the tracker can deliver exposures of up to two minutes with lenses up to 280mm, provided polar alignment is accurate. This gives enough room for astrophotographers to shoot deep sky and deepscape images with this star tracker.

The tracker supports both Northern and Southern Hemisphere operations, allowing photographers to use it across different parts of the world. Tracking can also be switched off whenever needed. Unlike larger equatorial mounts, the Nomad Harmonic I remains a manual tracker. It does not include GoTo functionality or automatic object locating.

Compact enough for every journey

One of the biggest attractions of the Nomad Harmonic I is its size. The tracker measures 125 × 95 × 110 millimetres and weighs 1,186 grams. Its CNC-machined aluminium body gives it the rigidity needed for field use without adding unnecessary weight.

For photographers who frequently travel, every kilogram adds up. Carrying a full equatorial mount often means checking extra luggage or leaving other equipment behind. A tracker this compact fits much more easily into a backpack alongside a camera, lenses, and accessories.

Move Shoot Move has also redesigned the mounting system. The Nomad Harmonic I includes an integrated wedge. Fine altitude adjustments can be made directly on the mount, simplifying polar alignment in the field. The wedge covers a latitude range from 0° to 65° and offers 5° of fine adjustment, making it suitable for imaging locations across much of the world.

The Move Shoot Move Harmonic I is priced at $599 (tracker only). Another bundle, which includes the tracker, polar scope, and metal light, will be sold for $669. You can pre-order both variants from the official Move Shoot Move website. Shipping is expected to commence from January 2027.
