Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8

Tamron has introduced the 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, a compact, constant-aperture zoom for Sony E and Nikon Z shooters. At $729, it sits well below most f/2.8 zooms in this class. It’s not a do-it-all workhorse like Sigma’s latest release, but it’s still a great, lightweight option for travel, street, and everyday use.

The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD offers a constant f/2.8 aperture in a fairly compact body, which makes it ideal to carry it around all day. Tamron’s VXD linear motor system handles the autofocus, and it plays nicely with Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF, and Nikon Z users get similar native compatibility.

But it looks like Tamron is aiming at more than photographers here. Quiet AF is a selling point for video and vlogging. The minimum focus distance is 6.7 inches with a 1:3.8 magnification ratio. That’s fairly close for a zoom, and handy for genres like product or food photography.

If your camera doesn’t have image stabilization, note that the lens lacks it as well. But if your Sony or Nikon feature IBIS, you’re good to go. The moisture-resistant construction and fluorine coating on the front element are welcome touches for a lens in this price range, making it a good companion in harsh conditions. At 385g, it’s light enough that it won’t feel like a burden on a mirrorless body.
