Tamron 12-20 F2.8

Tamron has announced the 12-20mm f/2.8, a full-frame ultrawide zoom coming to both Sony E and Nikon Z mounts. It’s a bright, constant-aperture lens aimed at landscape and architecture photographers, content creators, and anyone who wants dramatic perspective without hauling a heavy kit.

Starting at 12mm on a full-frame sensor gets you an extremely wide field of view. This is useful for tight interiors, grand landscapes, or squeezing a sweeping foreground into an astrophotography shot. The lens keeps the constant f/2.8 across the entire zoom, which matters for stills, but especially for video. Speaking of video, the VXD linear motor Tamron uses here is fast and quiet, so it won’t rattle through your audio track.

The 7.1-inch minimum focus distance at the wide end is a pretty great feature.  It opens up the possibility of getting extremely close to a foreground subject while keeping a vast background in frame. I also appreciate the 12-blade rounded diaphragm, which should produce clean sunstars at smaller apertures – a nice bonus for landscape work.

This is also the first lens to debut Tamron’s new Toned Profile Next design language. It brings upgraded ergonomics and looks like a noticeably more refined exterior compared to previous generations. There are some practical additions like the click on/off switch for the aperture ring (smooth for video, clicked for stills), a focus set button, and a rear sheet-filter holder. There’s also built-in USB-C port for Tamron Lens Utility access, for firmware updates and customization.

Note that the Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8 doesn’t have optical image stabilization. Still, I don’t see it as a major downside. First, at ultrawide focal lengths it’s less critical than it would be on a telephoto. And second, Sony and Nikon both offer strong in-body stabilization on their mirrorless bodies.
