Laowa’s Tiny New Zoom Lens Packs Two Fisheye Looks Into One

Fisheye lenses have always lived slightly outside the rules of photography. They bend horizons, stretch perspective, and turn ordinary scenes into something surreal. Now Laowa is pushing that idea even further with a tiny zoom lens that packs two distinct fisheye looks into one compact body.
The new Laowa 4.5-10mm f/2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye is designed for APS-C and Micro Four Thirds shooters, combining circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives in a lens small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
The lens covers an unusual focal range that shifts dramatically in character depending on the zoom position. At 4.5mm, it delivers a full circular fisheye effect with a 180-degree angle of view.
Zooming toward 10mm changes the image into a more traditional diagonal fisheye that fills the frame while still retaining strong curvature and distortion.

Two Fisheye Looks In One Lens
Most fisheye lenses lock photographers into a single visual style. Laowa’s approach here is more flexible. At the widest end, the lens creates the classic circular fisheye look where the image appears inside a rounded frame surrounded by black borders. It is the kind of perspective commonly used in skate videos, experimental photography, astrophotography, and immersive panorama work.
At 10mm, the frame becomes fully covered, producing a diagonal fisheye effect that still exaggerates perspective but feels more usable for landscapes, architecture, and action shots.
Laowa says the lens can also work well for creators who prefer to “de-fish” images in post-production. Correcting fisheye distortion digitally can sometimes produce a wider-looking result than a standard ultra-wide lens, giving photographers more flexibility after capture.

Fast Aperture And Close Focus
The lens maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, which is especially useful for low-light work. Fisheye lenses are often associated with creative outdoor shooting, but fast apertures can also make them practical for night skies, concerts, indoor events, and handheld video.
One of the more interesting specifications is the minimum focusing distance of just 10cm. That allows photographers to move extremely close to subjects while keeping a huge amount of the background visible. The result can create exaggerated foreground distortion often described as a “bug-eye” look.
That kind of close focusing opens up possibilities for stylized portraits, action sports, pet photography, and unusual environmental compositions where perspective becomes part of the storytelling.
Built For Video And Travel
Laowa is also positioning the lens as a tool for video creators. The 4.5-10mm features a parfocal design, meaning focus remains consistent while zooming. That is particularly useful for filmmakers trying to execute smooth zoom shots without constantly refocusing during recording.

Physically, the lens stays very compact. It weighs only 338 grams and measures 68.9mm by 59.3mm, giving it the “muffin lens” nickname mentioned by the company. Small fisheye lenses are not new, but zoom fisheyes in this size category are relatively uncommon.
That portability could appeal to FPV drone users, travel photographers, vloggers, and gimbal shooters looking to keep setups lightweight while still experimenting with highly stylized perspectives.
Laowa’s Growing Reputation For Unusual Optics
Over the past few years, Laowa has built a reputation for making lenses that target niche creative ideas rather than competing directly with mainstream zooms and portrait lenses.
The company has released ultra-wide probe lenses, extreme macro optics, compact anamorphic lenses, and specialty shift lenses that often attract filmmakers and experimental photographers.
This latest release continues that pattern. Instead of chasing technical perfection or neutral rendering, the 4.5-10mm leans heavily into distortion and exaggerated perspective as part of the creative appeal.
The Laowa 4.5-10mm f/2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye will be available starting May 21 through the company’s website and authorized resellers for $399.
For photographers who enjoy lenses with personality instead of clinical precision, this may end up being one of the more entertaining releases of the year.
