DuckDuckGo sunglasses

DuckDuckGo just launched its own pair of smart glasses. If you’re also against the controversial Meta smart glasses, you’re gonna love this. The privacy-focused search engine has teamed up with Knockaround to sell “smart glasses” with no cameras, no AI, and no electronics. Yes, they’re just… Sunglasses. And the marketing behind them is spot on!

DuckDuckGo sunglasses cost $35, which is refreshing in a market where Meta charges $299 for glasses that might film you without your consent. The company stays true to its principles in the ad, describing them as “the world’s most innovative anti-surveillance sunglasses, also known as normal sunglasses.”

“These are the first smart glasses guaranteed to never record nude videos of you and send them to random people,” the ad continues. “I never thought I would have to guarantee that, but here we are.” Indeed, here we are. On the product website, DuckDuck go notes that these are “normal f***ing sunglasses,” because “big tech made glasses that spy on you and everyone around you.”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of controversies surrounding Meta smart glasses ever since they first appeared. We recently covered Meta’s tamper-detection update for its glasses’ capture LED, which doesn’t exactly solve the problem. And you may remember that the company faced a class action lawsuit over privacy concerns.

Well, no concerns about that with DuckDuckGo sunglasses. As the ad wraps up, the these sunglasses also block the Sun “and make you look as good as hell.” Honestly, the only features of sunglasses that I care about.

But it gets even funnier. The Onion joined in on the mockery, posting a fake user review of the DuckDuckGo glasses on Instagram. One of the “reviewers” gave them zero out of ten, calling them “useless for perverts.” Yikes! I also like the dude saying he’d have to “violate people’s privacy the old-fashioned way: from the bushes.”

DuckDuckGo’s sunglasses are obviously a marketing stunt, even though you can actually order a pair. But in this day and age, the “0% surveillance risk” feature is something actually worth pointing out – and I find it a little scary. But hey, I’ve dealt with loads of scary situations and emotions with humor. Apparently, DuckDuckGo is using the same logic to make this world slightly easier to live in.
