DIYP is a member of Alfie Cameras’ VIP Superfan program and has learned about the impending release of their [BOXX] on Kickstarter. The scheduled date for the launch is 19 May 2026.

The [BOXX] camera represents an interesting blend of conventional film photography with “instant” camera technology. Unlike today’s instant cameras, however, that eject an encapsulated developing print, [BOXX] relies on a unique, revolutionary “wet” development system that was invented by Alfie Cameras‘ founder Dave Faulkner.

Using ADOX chemistry and photographic paper, Mr. Faulkner devised a magnetically-joined plate holder that does double duty as a portable darkroom. In this manner, following a conventional exposure, the plate holder is removed from the camera and developer, bleach, and clarifying or clearing agent are alternatively injected into the holder for developing the exposed paper negative.

The final result is a gratifying “instantly” available self-developed positive photograph. Does it work, you ask? Surprisingly, the results from this completely unorthodox procedure look superior to any other traditional instant prints.

Developing on Kickstarter

At this point in time, DIYP can divulge a few of the more important features about this impending launch. First of all, the exact time of the Kickstarter launch is 7:30 EDT under the “camera equipment” category.

Secondly, upon launch, you can expect at least two model variants of the [BOXX] camera:

  • An entry level model with a single pinhole lens option.
  • An advanced model with both a Wollaston 100mm single glass element lens and a pinhole lens.

Additionally, there will be options for a camera bag, light-tight changing bag, and focusing cloth.

Finally, unsubstantiated rumors indicate that pricing for “early-bird” backers could range between $220 to $330 for the entry level and advanced models, respectively. Also, please note: [BOXX] is NOT a 4×5 format camera. Rather it’s a 2 1/4 x 3 1/2-inch (6×9-cm) format camera.

Enjoy.
