Photographer Benj Haisch was on the tail end of a family vacation through Scandinavia when his world turned upside down. His precious photo gear was stolen – but he managed to track down the bag and the thieves. But what’s especially wild about this story: he confronted them himself and caught the entire encounter on camera!

The bag is a compact yet capacious model from Clever Supply Co. It contained a Sony a9 III, a Hasselblad 907X with the CFV 100c back, a Leica 50mm Summilux, and various other accessories – all worth over $25,000. A seemingly innocuous decision to secure his camera bag on a bike rack in Copenhagen quickly becomes a harrowing ordeal.

A brief detour to the apartment with his young children left the bag unattended. Upon returning, he discovered it was gone. Panic ensued, but a glimmer of hope appeared when he remembered the AirTags he’d placed within the bag and on the camera itself. The tracking device indicated the bag was nearby.

Armed with determination and a pair of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Benj embarked on a high-stakes chase. The glasses, equipped with a built-in camera, were the reason why this event ended up being recorded. The AirTag led him to a place near a metro station where he spotted a man carrying the distinctive bag. A tense confrontation unfolded as Benj accused the man of theft. The photographer’s detailed knowledge of the bag’s contents, coupled with the AirTag’s proximity, proved to be damning evidence.

The exchange between men was brief and intense, but it didn’t escalate. Benj asked about the bag’s content, and the man only knew there was “a Hasselblad” inside, a camera he’d actually removed and placed into his own backpack. Thankfully, the camera’s AirTag revealed where it was, and Benj managed to retrieve it. The thief asked for a small sum of money to return the gear. Although he felt it wasn’t fair, Benj prioritized the safe return of his gear over further escalation, so he went to an ATM and gave him the money.

What can we learn from Benj’s case?

This sadly isn’t the first or the last time we see someone’s gear getting stolen. While I’m not sure how smart it is to confront thieves directly (this could have ended much differently), it sure was brave. Benj stayed cold-headed and reasonable enough to not escalate the situation, yet get his gear back.

We can certainly learn some things from this case, though. First and the most obvious one: always be mindful of your belongings, especially when in public places. Avoid leaving your gear unattended, even for a minute or two. Consider using tracking devices like AirTags to monitor the location of your gear. This can significantly increase your chances of recovery even if the theft does happen.

In case your gear gets stolen, prioritize your safety. I’d advise you to avoid confrontation if possible – I remember a Serbian photographer who confronted a thief and got shot in the eye (thankfully, he survived). Remember that time is of the essence when recovering stolen items. Use available resources and technology to track the stolen property promptly and contact the police immediately.

If you do decide to confront the thieves yourself, use a hidden camera (like smart glasses in this case) to gather evidence or aid in recovery efforts.

Finally, learn from experience. Analyze the situation to understand how you could have prevented the theft and how you can better protect your gear in the future.
