VSCO Acquired The Freelance Photographer—Here’s What It Means for Aspiring Pros

Anzalna Siddiqui

A psychology major in her third year of Bachelor’s, Anzalna Siddiqui has endless curiosity for the human mind and a deep love for storytelling – both through words and visuals. Though she hasn’t taken up photography as a profession, her Instagram is where her passion finds its home. In addition to this, she’s a travel enthusiast who never travels without her camera because every place has a story waiting to be captured.

VSCO Acquired The Freelance Photographer

Have you thought about turning your passion into a profession? VSCO has just taken a step that might help you. VSCO acquired The Freelance Photographer, an online platform that teaches aspiring photographers how to become professionals.

This platform focuses on the business aspects of photography that many art schools overlook. It covers setting prices, pitching to clients, and creating steady income sources. Making beautiful images is still important, but there’s more to it now!

The Freelance Photographer aims to connect creative skills with business knowledge. Their mission is to help photographers build fulfilling careers while linking brands with talented visual storytellers for lasting collaborations.

What’s in the Educational Toolkit?

The platform provides a comprehensive business education program for commercial photographers and videographers. The courses include market analysis, brand positioning, pricing strategies, and how to pitch your projects effectively.

Learning is available through various formats. You can join webinars for quick lessons, participate in intensive workshops for in-depth knowledge, or take part in coaching programs that offer mentorship. (Sometimes, you need someone to remind you that charging more than $50 for a headshot session is okay!)

Moreover, a supportive community of experienced freelance photographers hosts peer-led sessions. These professionals share their successes, challenges, and everything else with newcomers trying to navigate the industry.

Why This Deal Makes Sense?

Eric Wittman, CEO of VSCO, says,

“There’s a clear gap in the market for business education and industry-specific guidance for emerging photography professionals who are looking to secure sustainable client relationships.”

Paul Weaver, the founder of The Freelance Photographer, views the acquisition as a chance for growth. He says,

“Joining VSCO means we can reach a broader audience to help them build successful businesses and get to scale faster. We’ll also be able to build better tools, offer more support, and create more opportunities for our community together.”

The timing is ideal. Although the creator economy has grown rapidly, photographers still struggle to get the specialized training to run their businesses. At the same time, brands looking for creative talent often struggle to find qualified professionals.

What’s Next for Photographers?

The Freelance Photographer will continue to function independently from the main VSCO app. The next enrollment chance will be from August 19 to 29, 2025. So, as you know, the membership starts at $2,500.

This acquisition is part of VSCO’s larger goal of helping photographers, whether they are just starting or are experienced professionals. They have already introduced VSCO Hub for getting noticed, VSCO Sites for creating portfolios without coding issues, and VSCO Canvas for collaboration.

Wittman suggests that some educational materials from The Freelance Photographer might eventually be included in VSCO’s regular membership. For now, however, you’ll need to pay for the entire platform to participate in their business boot camp.
