Since you’re here, we already assume that you love photography. But if you’re also a fan of trippy visuals and dreamy, non-violent video games, then you’ll love Alekon. It’s a cute fantasy video game made for photographers and photographers-to-be.

Originally released on Steam in 2021, Alekon is getting its Nintendo Switch version on April 6, 2023. In case you haven’t heard of it like I haven’t before writing this, let’s see what it looks like and what it offers.

From what we can see in the trailer, the game is one of those totally innocent, non-violent, adorable video games, perfect for relaxing and wasting time. Personally, even when I play games (once in a blue moon), I choose something like this.

There are over 50 characters in the game, each with unique personalities, dialogue, and quests. The game revolves around photography, and photo scores unlock new levels to progress the game. You get to photograph whimsical creatures and solve puzzles to get them to strike collectable poses. There are also various quests and minigames involving not only photography, but also music, art, and dialogue. Yup, definitely my kind of game.

As you probably know, Alekon isn’t the only photography-based game out there. Games like Toem and Photography Simulator are all about photography. Then, there’s Shashingo which teaches you Japanese through photography. Finally, many video games like Read Dead Redemption, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, Grand Theft Auto, and even Sims 4, have the photo mode. Many photographers turned to video games during lockdowns, using them not only as a pastime but also as a shooting alternative.

While I’m definitely more of a photographer than a gamer, I’m happy to see that there are more and more games revolving around photography. So, if you’re playing your games on Nintendo Switch, stay tuned for Alekon’s release on 6 April, and get it on Steam.
