Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DSR have proven quite popular amongst landscape, architecture, product, macro and other photographers who demand high resolutions over speed. But they were released in 2015 and Canon has shown no indication that they’ll be replaced by an upcoming DSLR. A high-resolution EOS R mirrorless model, however, has been rumoured for a while now.

Now it looks like the folks at Canon Rumors have managed to get their hands on some possible specs for the new high-res mirrorless, which they’re dubbing the “EOS Rs”. Their source also claims to have shot with a prototype of the new model, and that we can expect an announcement possibly as soon as February.

  • 75-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor
  • DIGIC 9 processor
  • Dual card slots
  • EOS-1D X Mark III-style joystick
  • Larger and higher resolution EVF than the EOS R
  • Fully articulating LCD screen
  • Fully weather sealed
  • Similar ergonomics to the EOS R (no touch bar)

The source also told CR that the frames per second “Sounded similar to the EOS R”. The Canon EOS R shoots 8fps or 5fps with continuous-servo AF, and they don’t say which they’re comparing to, but it sounds like shooting speed isn’t a massive priority for this model. They also say that the sensor will be “focused on the dynamic range”. The other possible big bit of news is that it looks like Canon might finally be releasing a mirrorless camera with dual card slots. Exactly what those slots are is anybody’s guess, but I would expect it to be SD, CFexpress or a combination of the two.

There’s no word on other specs or its video capabilities, but if an announcement is planned for February, we can probably expect more details to appear as we get closer to that date.
