Photography can be an expensive passion, and we often talk about it. But not everything you buy to improve as a photographer kicks out thousands of dollars from your pocket. In his latest video, Adam of First Man Photography shares ten less-mentioned and pretty affordable tools that can boost your creativity, help you experiment, and even make perfect last-minute gifts.
1. Embrace the magic of a pinhole camera
Adam starts with the pinhole camera. These cameras don’t use lenses, they reflect the light through a tiny pinhole and project it onto photosensitive material. You can buy one, sure… But even better, you can make one at home using pretty much anything! From a Pringles tube to an orange, anything is a camera if you’re creative (or crazy) enough. Even your digital camera can become one.
2. A portable LED light
Next on Adam’s list is a portable LED light, an incredibly versatile tool. Unlike flashes, LED lights offer constant light, making it easier to design your shot and experiment. They’re perfect for macro photography, product shots, and even illuminating nighttime landscapes.
Adam’s favorites include the Aputure MC with full RGB color control and magnetic mounts, and Lume Cube, which can even be attached to drones for light painting.
3. Add photography trinkets to your kit
Small tools and knick-knacks can make a big difference. Adam’s go-to items include phone tripod mounts for steady smartphone shots, reflectors for enhancing portrait lighting, and light boxes for soft product photography lighting. He also mentions macro rails for precision focus stacking and tripod collar mounts for better balance with long lenses.
4. Experiment with an instant camera or portable printer
Adam highlights the joy of seeing your photos in print instantly. Whether it’s a Polaroid camera or a portable printer like the Canon Selphy QX20. They create physical prints and add a tangible, satisfying element to your photography. I recently got a Polaroid camera for my birthday (something I’ve always wanted) and I can tell you, it also brings back that nostalgic feeling of being really intentional with your shots – film’s expensive, you guys! :)
5. Discover inspiration in photography books
Adam recommends investing in photography books or prints from other artists. Not only is it a way to support fellow creatives, but it’s also a great source of inspiration. For every ten prints Adam sells, he treats himself to one or two from other photographers—something that connects him with the art form on a deeper level. I love doing the same. I exchange prints with my fellow photographers, but I also buy various handmade items from other makers, as I’m into handcrafts myself. It creates and strengthens your creative community; and not to mention that it enriches your living space with unique items made with lots of love, devotion, and skill.
6. Prioritize fitness for landscape photography
Although this isn’t gear, it’s something you should consider investing time and some money into: physical activity. Hear me out. Adam suggests it for landscape photographers, but I think it’s useful for everyone. Carrying heavy gear, hiking to remote locations, spending lots of time on your feet and in uncomfortable positions… These all require physical stamina. Plus, exercise is good for your mental health, and good mental health equals more creativity and happiness. So, get that gym membership, start hiking, cycling, or yoga; or get a pair of good sneakers and start running.
7. Play with alternative lenses
Alternative lenses, such as tilt-shift lenses, can unlock creative possibilities. The tilt function lets you control the plane of focus, while the shift feature is perfect for architectural shots or seamless panoramas. While these lenses can be pricey, used options can make them more affordable. Also, you can play with DIY options here as well.
8. A solar generator for on-the-go power
Adam’s love for adventure includes a surprising recommendation: a solar generator. While solar panels are weather-dependent, the generator’s built-in battery can keep your devices powered during long trips or outdoor shoots. It’s a practical tool for photographers who enjoy working off the grid.
9. Stay organized with ample storage
From cloud services to external drives, having reliable storage is a must for photographers. Adam advises investing in RAID systems and backups to protect your work.
10. Find joy in experimenting
Adam concludes with a reminder to focus on tools that inspire you to shoot. Whether it’s a quirky gadget or a unique lens, the goal is to fuel your creativity and explore new perspectives. They can even be random Dollar Store gadgets. And they don’t have anything to do with photography – until you repurpose them.
