Sigma Expands Art Line – Adds 24mm f/1.4 + New dp0 Quattro Camera

When Sigma introduced the 50mm Art lens photographer were pretty happy to get an almost Zeiss quality lens for under a $1000 price tag. (You can see some comparisons and tests here, here and here). We’ve heard many rumors on an upcoming 24mm art lens and today Sigma broadens the art line with a 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens, and if it compares to the 50mm art, there is much reason to rejoice.

The 20 art (A.K.A Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens) will be available for all three mounts when it starts shipping: Nikon, Canon and Sigma. I assume we will see Sony coming soon. Well, there are no prices or dates yet, so those will probably have to come first :)

One nice update to the line is the ability to switch from Auto focus to manual focus simply by engaging the focus ring (similar to Nikon and Canon lenses).

Canon’s 11-24mm f/4 Confirmed. Will It Outdo Nikon’s Famed 14-24mm?

Canon Rumors reports that the existence of the EF 11-24 f/4L has been confirmed and several retailers have been provided with info about the lens.

Expected to set you back $2899 ($3100 in Canada), Canon’s new ultra wide angle will be the widest rectilinear lens ever produced for DSLRs.

Despite a maximum aperture of f/4, will this lens put an end to Canon shooters jumping ship in favor of Nikon’s legendary 14-24?

Sigma Further Pushes Quattro Format With New DP1 And Three New Lenses

Expanding on it’s Quattro line, Sigma has just announced the dp1 Quattro. The dp1 is similar in almost every way to it’s sibling, the dp2, with the only exception being the focal lengths. At 19mm, the dp1 is the widest lens currently available in the dp Quattro series.

Along with the dp1 announcement, Sigma also introduced us to 3 new lenses; a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens, a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens, and 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM Contemporary Lens.

Sigma Gearing to Aim at Tamron With New Massive Telephoto Lens

It’s that time of the year again, and with Photokina back in session comes the inevitable new gear announcements, as well as the rumors leading up to them. This time, the rumors are about a new and upcoming telephoto lens from Sigma. Made for their Sports line, the 150-600mm F/5.6-6.3 lens seems to be a direct competitor to Tamron’s own recently released 150-600mm model.

Sigma 50 Art Lens Compared With The Canon 50mm F1.2L

Up until recently the question of getting an original branded lens (e.g. Canon, Nikon) vs a 3rd Party lens (e.g. Sigma, Tamron) was not really a question. If you could afford the original brand lens, the answer was, go for the original.

However, with Sigma’s recent ART lenses things may have changed. Photographer Will Chao took both the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens for a head to head battle and the results are not as conclusive anymore.

Sigma Might Be Announcing its 85mm F/1.4 DG Art Lens At Photokina This Year

According to Canon Rumors, Sigma might be preparing to give us a good look at its upcoming 85mm f/1.4 DG Art series lens around late August. While the actual lens itself isn’t supposed to be here until early next year, this means that it could be getting announced in the next few months already at Photokina.

Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 Art Lens Comes in Second Only to Zeiss in DxOMark Tests

Back in February, we posted about Xitek’s testing of the highly anticipated Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens. Against the $4000 55mm Zeiss Otus, Sigma came out on top in comparisons and shocked almost every photography blog out there. Today, however, DxO mark put both lenses up against each other and it seems from their end that the Zeiss Otus hasn’t been ousted just yet.

Sigma Ordered to Pay Nikon $14.5 Million As A Two-Year Lawsuit Comes to an End

Back in 2011, Nikon filed a lawsuit against Sigma for patent infringement involving lenses with stabilization technology (VR in Nikonspeak and OS in Sigma lingo). The Tokyo district court recently announced its final judgements, and they conclude with Sigma ordered to pay Nikon a total sum of 14.5 million dollars (which is 1.5 billion yen).

New Sigma 50mm F/1.4 Compared – Comes Out On Top

Earlier this year, Sigma generated a good amount of noise throughout the photography community when the company stated the intended target competition of their upcoming 50mm F/1.4 lens: Zeiss’s $4,000 55mm Otus. That can either result in us getting one a big leap in quality for lenses on the market at a (hopefully) more consumer-friendly price, or it can end with us having some serious trust issues.

Just recently, Xitek has posted the first few pictures of the Sigma lens engaged in tests with three other lenses: the Sony Planar T 50mm F/1.4 ZA SSM, the Nikon Nikkor AF-S 58mm F/1.4G, and the targeted Zeiss 55mm F/1.4 Otus. (cheapest of which is ~$1500).[Read More…]
