Photokina 2020

Breaking: After 70 years the Photokina trade show shuts down indefinitely

The organisers of Photokina at the Koelnmesse have just announced that Photokina, the Biennial photography trade show in Cologne, Germany, has come to an end after 70 years. The show had sent out emails to exhibitors this morning, letting them know what was going on, and then announced the news publicly via press release.

They say that this hasn’t been directly caused by the coronavirus pandemic, although it did cause the cancellation of Photokina 2020, stating that “the imaging market was already subject to strong upheaval, with annual declines in the double digits”. 2020 simply amplified this effect and has led to their current decision.

Breaking: Photokina 2020 in Cologne, Germany has been cancelled – Next one in 2022

Well, after The Photography Show and NAB, it was pretty obvious that Photokina was going to meet the same fate soon enough. Despite all three initially saying that they were going ahead one day shy of a month ago, and Photokina just a couple of weeks ago saying they see no reason to shut down, all three are now cancelled. Ok, technically TPS is postponed, but we’ll see.

Photokina organisers, Koelnmesse, issued a statement announcing the cancellation of the show, with the next event to be held in 2022 (not 2021). So, it seems like their new annual schedule (first announced in 2017) is being delayed yet again.

The first company to officially withdraw from next month’s NAB in Las Vegas is AJA Video Systems. In an announcement, AJA specifically cites the “risks from the Coronavirus” as the cause of their withdrawal from the show.

At the same time, both Microsoft and Google have announced that they’ve cancelled two of their conferences. Microsoft’s MVP Summit in Seattle and Google’s Cloud Next in San Francisco have also now been cancelled, coming days after the cancellation of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. CP+ and MWC were both also cancelled last month.

The coronavirus situation has the world’s population divided. On the one side, many aren’t worried. That it’s just SARS, MERS, Bird Flu or Ebola all over again and that it’ll blow over. On the other, some people are very worried, particularly organisers of large events such as MWC in Barcelona, CP+ in Tokyo and now GDC in San Francisco.

TPS, NAB and Photokina all recently announced that they are still currently going ahead as planned, but the situation in Europe has changed since then. A couple of days ago, however, at a press conference in Tokyo, Photokina organisers still say that there is no reason to cancel the event.

We often forget that most camera companies don’t just make cameras and lenses. Take Fujifilm, for example, whose subsidiaries include Fujifilm Pharmaceutical. A subsidiary which, according to a report, has helped to raise Fujifilm’s share value by 8.8% over the weekend after Japan’s Health Minister mentioned the country’s plans to recommend Fujifilm’s Avigan drug to treat coronavirus.

With the recent cancellations of both Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona and CP+ in Japan due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, there is growing concern about what may happen to other large trade shows within the photography and video industry over the next few months.

DIYP reached out to The Photography Show (TPS) in the UK, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in the USA, and Photokina in Germany to find out their current thoughts and plans for their upcoming shows.

The first major photography trade show of the year, and one of the largest in the world, CP+ 2020 has been cancelled over coronavirus fears. Japan has reported its first death as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the second such confirmed death outside of China. Amid fears that there is no effective treatment or containment measures, organisers have chosen to cancel CP+2020.

This is the second major tech event to be cancelled over coronavirus fears. The world’s largest smartphone show, Mobile World Congress (MWC) was cancelled on February 12th. A notification the CP+ website informs readers of the cancellation of the show, which was planned to take place between February 27th and March 1st, 2020.
