Leaked code shows Instagram may soon launch voice and video calls

Instagram keeps adding new features to the app, some of them inspired by Snapchat or Instagram’s parent company, Facebook. A recent report shows that Instagram may soon add another new feature to the app: voice calls and video calls. As TechCrunch writes, a leaked code shows that icons and files for these two features are lying within the app, waiting to be released.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram had no comment on the new features. It appears, however, that voice and video calls are only meant for internal testing for now. However, Instagram’s no. 1 competitor Snapchat has launched video calls in 2014. It’s no secret that Instagram has “borrowed” certain features from Snapchat, such as Stories or screenshot alerts. Therefore, it will not be a surprise if the famous photo sharing app gets voice and video calls as well.

Regardless of competing with Snapchat, Instagram users might find voice and video calls convenient. As Ars Technica writes, Facebook understands the importance of having chat functions within the app. Just like Messenger allows you to chat and make voice and video calls, it could become available on Instagram, too.

On the other hand, I don’t understand why you would want to make voice and video calls through Instagram, if you have Facebook Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp or any other app that already offers these options. But that’s just me. I think too much is happening on Instagram already. What do you think? Would you find it handy to use voice and video calls on Instagram?
