There have been one or two rumours that Sony might be about to introduce a 100mm f/1.4 GM lens. They may not be true, but it would be a great lens for Sony to add to their lineup. Nikon has its 105mm f/1.4 and while there is an FE mount version of Sigma’s 105mm f/1.4 “Bokeh Master” Art lens, it’s essentially still an adapted DSLR lens.
Sony Alpha Rumours has posted what might a possible spec sheet for an upcoming Sony 100mm f/1.4 GM lens – although “spec sheet” would be generous. There’s very little actual information, even if it turns out to be true. But the idea of a native FE mount 100mm f/1.4 by Sony themselves in the form of a GM lens is quite exciting.
So far, the rumoured specs look a little something like this…
- Focal length: 100mm
- Max aperture f/1.4
- Quad XD motors
- 3x Extreme Aspherical (XA) elements
- 1x Super Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) element
- Nano AR II coating
- 82mm filter thread
- Weight: 875g
As with all rumours, but possibly this one more than most, the specs might be complete nonsense. SAR says it comes from a new source. There might not even be a Sony 100mm f/1.4 GM on the way at all. However, a patent was discovered in January 2019 detailing both Sony 135mm f/1.8 (released in February 2019) and Sony 100mm f/1.4 lenses. So, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that it’s actually true. Still, SAR regards this as a “Wild Rumor” at this point.
What do you think? Should Sony release this lens? Would you buy one?
