The first of the Nikon D850 press photos have leaked and it has a tilt screen

Well, that didn’t take long, did it? After sort-of announcing the Nikon D850 only yesterday during the Nikon 100th anniversary celebrations, the first photos have leaked. Nikon Rumors have managed to get their hands on two of the press photos for the new body. They illustrate two fairly significant features.
They were features we were kind of expecting anyway, but if the photos are real, then it just confirms it. First is the D500-style tilting LCD, and what appear to be illuminated buttons. Nikon Rumors believe these images to be genuine, as the pentaprism is clearly the same shape as that shown in the Nikon teaser image.
It also appears that they’ve shifted the ISO and Mode buttons around from its D810 predecessor, too. This also brings it somewhat in line with the D500 button layout.
Another significant difference is the lack of popup flash. This isn’t exactly surprising. Most of Nikon’s highest end bodies have also had this obvious (mostly useless) feature missing, too. And for good reason, it wastes valuable space.
And if you were in any doubt about the shape of the prism, this is the teaser that Nikon put out.
So, assuming the photos are correct, here’s what we know so far.
- It’s called the Nikon D850
- There’s a tilting (presumably touchscreen) LCD
- It has illuminated buttons
- There’s no popup flash
- They’ve moved at least 2 of the buttons around
Hopefully, a more official announcement will be coming very soon. It usually does after the images start to get out.

the pop up flash will be missed :( it was quite useful to command an off-camera nikon flash for instance.
Wow a tilt screen man what innovation ?
Leaked photos the day after or before an announcement. Hmm, does anyone think this might be a standard marketing practice for Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. these days?
Nikon is playing catch-up with the tilt screen, something I’ve wanted forever. MUCH more important to me, esp. in video, is remote screen to something like a smartphone. It’s time they get out ahead with something like WIFi remote screen / monitor to a phone/tablet.
Even more exciting would be a full API / software-defined-camera. Let ME make the decisions.
I already do that with qDslrDashboard to iPad, Android & Windows tablet. Supports the native pre-SnapBridge WiFi. Don’t know if it supports SnapBridge cameras or not, but I can use it over WiFi even as far back as my D300s and D7000 bodies with a hacked TP-Link router. Works great. :)
Nikon needs to have more swivel screens, besides the 5000 series.
I’m not going to disagree with you there! :)
Indeed! Tilt screens are so limited.
Second that. My 500 screen is taking some damage. At this rate it will out live my D5100.

Good thing it appears to have a viewfinder too, as if you’ve ever tried to use a camcorder with a tilt screen or live view outdoors in the sunlight, your gonna suck air ..
The tilt screen on my 750 has proved to be more useful than I though.
I’m confused though, if there’s no popup flash (thankfully) why is there a seam by the hot shoe?
Does it have Phase detect live-view for video and photo?
