If you have been following trends in creator lighting, amaran has once again raised the bar with its newest release. The company has unveiled the Ray series, a next-generation line of full-color COBs designed to meet the evolving needs of photographers, videographers, and live content creators.

With four new models ranging from 60 watts to 660 watts, the Ray series promises higher output, more accurate color reproduction, and workflow-friendly features that address both mobile and studio shooting scenarios. These fixtures mark a significant evolution for amaran, providing power, portability, and precision in compact, thoughtfully engineered packages.

What’s in the Ray Series?

The Ray series consists of four models: the Ray 60c at 60 watts, the Ray 120c at 120 watts, the Ray 360c at 360 watts, and the Ray 660c at 660 watts. This range covers a spectrum of use cases, from highly mobile shoots to full-scale studio productions.

Each fixture is designed to deliver substantial light output without the bulk associated with conventional studio COB lights. The smaller Ray 60c and 120c offer ultra-portable solutions for on-location shoots, while the 360c and 660c address high-demand studio environments where power, consistency, and control are essential.

What’s the OmniColor Light Engine?

The Ray series is powered by amaran’s new OmniColor light engine, which improves color fidelity and consistency over previous generations of amaran full-color COBs. The series emphasizes practical workflow improvements alongside technical performance, making it relevant for creators who need reliable output, accurate color, and flexible operation in the field.

OmniColor improves upon previous amaran chipsets by:

  • Expanding the red and blue color ranges to better reproduce deep hues.
  • Introducing an indigo emitter, which fills gaps in the spectrum for smoother, more balanced light.
  • Achieving SSI (Spectral Similarity Index) scores of 87 for tungsten and 80 for D56 daylight, which ensures consistent color reproduction on camera.

These enhancements mean the light output from the Ray series more closely matches what you see in real life. The broader spectrum allows for cleaner whites, more natural skin tones, and accurate color rendering across various materials and surfaces. This is particularly useful for mixed-light environments or when you are shooting alongside other LED fixtures or ambient light sources.

Light Output and Efficiency

Each fixture in the Ray series is calibrated for optimized output relative to its size and wattage. For example:

  • Ray 60c: 60 watts, 50 percent higher output than the previous amaran COB 60x S, producing enough light for tight, on-location interviews or mobile streaming setups.
  • Ray 120c: 120 watts, delivering 22 percent more output than the amaran 150c while reducing physical size by nearly 85 percent, making it extremely portable.
  • Ray 360c: 360 watts, over 80 percent more output than the earlier 300c model, suitable for mid-sized studio setups or group video shoots.
  • Ray 660c: 660 watts, the brightest amaran COB to date, capable of lighting larger studio spaces with even coverage from longer distances.

All fixtures maintain high efficacy, producing more lumens per watt than previous generations, which reduces heat output and ensures quieter operation, which is a critical factor for video recording and live streaming.

Workflow and Control Features

The Ray series introduces several workflow-focused technologies to streamline operations:

  • IP54 Weather Resistance: Each fixture is dust and splash-resistant, allowing you to shoot confidently outdoors in light rain, wind, or dusty conditions without fear of damaging the electronics.
  • NFC Pairing: The built-in NFC system allows rapid setup in the amaran app. you can register multiple fixtures without powering them on, significantly speeding up complex multi-light setups.
  • FlowTurn Control Knob: This adaptive knob provides dual functionality. Slow rotations allow precise one-step adjustments for critical color or brightness changes, while rapid spins accelerate settings when speed is needed.
  • Modifier Ecosystem: The Ray 60c and 120c accept mini reflectors, fresnels, and barn doors. The Ray 360c and 660c support full-size reflectors, fresnels, and Bowens Mount accessories, ensuring compatibility with the complete amaran softbox lineup.

These features make it easier for you to build repeatable setups for interviews, live streams, music videos, or short films without excessive setup time or complex cabling.

Ray 60c and 120c: Compact Mobility

The Ray 60c and 120c are aimed at creators who prioritize portability. Both models pack high-output performance into ultra-compact, lightweight designs:

  • Ray 60c: 4.4 centimeters thick, 528 grams.
  • Ray 120c: 5.1 centimeters thick, 599 grams.

Despite their small size, these lights deliver significant output improvements over previous generations. Both models also integrate with amaran Peak battery systems via the Ace E-Lock system, enabling cable-free operation on location. The Ray 60c runs for approximately 46 minutes at full power on the Peak 75 battery, while the Ray 120c runs for 35 minutes. USB-C PD input is supported as an alternative, allowing flexible power sourcing from USB-C power banks or chargers.

Each fixture comes ready-to-shoot with the Octa Dome 30 Softbox, diffuser, grid, Ace Lock to Baby Pin Adapter Grip, power adapter, and cable, all packed in a dedicated travel bag.

Ray 360c and 660c: Studio-Grade Output

The Ray 360c and 660c bring studio-grade power into a creator-friendly form factor. Both feature all-in-one monolight designs, integrating the power supply directly into the head. This eliminates the need for external bricks and reduces clutter on set.

  • Ray 360c: Offers over 80 percent more output than the 300c, making it suitable for mid-sized studio productions or multi-subject interviews.
  • Ray 660c: The brightest amaran COB yet, capable of illuminating large studio spaces with even coverage from greater distances.

Both models include DMX control through an optional USB-C to 5-pin DMX adapter. This allows you to integrate the lights into professional console workflows, enabling precise cueing, dimming, and synchronization across multiple fixtures. These features make the Ray 360c and 660c highly versatile for controlled studio setups while maintaining consistent, high-quality color output.
