Many people have been conditioned to believe that owning the most expensive, cutting-edge camera is the key to creating amazing photos. After all, that’s why they always ask us, “What camera did you use to capture that?” But Warren of Newcastle Photography College challenges this idea, arguing that buying a $100 secondhand camera might actually be one of the smartest decisions you can make.

In his video, Warren explains that high-end gear often creates a mental barrier. If you’re carrying a camera and lens combination worth thousands of dollars, you’re likely to avoid risky environments like the beach, dusty trails, or even a boat ride. Instead, you may leave your camera safely tucked away in its bag—or worse, at home—missing countless photo opportunities. On the other hand, a cheap used camera removes that worry. For as low as $100, you can find a reliable setup (a camera and a kit lens) that produces great results while giving you the freedom to take it into places you’d normally avoid.

Risky and messy situations

One of Warren’s favorite uses for his budget camera is shooting in the surf. He often photographs swimsuit sessions while standing waist-deep in the ocean, with waves crashing over him. Saltwater can be devastating for cameras (just ask Alex), so he leaves his full-frame gear behind and brings his secondhand camera with a kit lens. If the camera takes a hit, he’s only out $100. The trade-off is the ability to create stunning images that few others would risk trying to capture.

Warren also pushes his secondhand camera to its creative limits without worrying that he’ll ruin it. He mounts it in trees to shoot dramatic overhead angles, bolts it to the roof rack of a car, and even attaches it to his son’s mountain bike for dynamic action shots in the woods. He’s hung it out of car windows and strapped it to bike wheels for unique perspectives. These are setups he wouldn’t dream of attempting with a $5,000 camera, but the lower stakes of a budget camera unlock endless creative possibilities.

Warren has used his budget camera to capture an incredible variety of shots, from sparks and fire to sand, smoke, water spray, and even underwater in swimming pools. He’s taken it to abandoned places, dusty environments, and other challenging settings that most photographers avoid with their expensive gear. These risky environments often result in the most extraordinary photos, and the low-cost camera ensures that nothing holds him back.

Safety concerns

Shooting in urban areas at night is another instance where Warren prefers his secondhand camera. While he lives in a relatively safe city, the possibility of theft always exists. Losing a $100 camera isn’t a big deal compared to losing high-end gear. This peace of mind allows him to focus on his photography without fear of being targeted or robbed.

Backup camera

Finally, a cheap camera also serves as a fantastic backup. If your primary camera fails, runs out of battery, or faces an unexpected mishap, having a secondhand camera on hand can save the day. Warren notes that even older cameras with kit lenses are capable of producing excellent image quality. Modern sensors and lenses are so advanced that the difference in results between a budget camera and high-end gear often goes unnoticed.

Choose wisely

Of course, whenever you buy used gear, check the camera and lens carefully. Make sure the camera is in good working condition, the lens is clear, and there’s no mildew, fungus, or damage. Even some tiny scratches might be fine and go unnoticed in your images. Just try not to buy those with dead flies or spiders inside. :)

Warren believes a secondhand camera isn’t just a tool—it’s a gateway to opportunities that might otherwise pass you by. By removing the fear of damage or loss, you can embrace risk, get creative, and explore photography in a whole new way.

Get a Cheap Camera for unique images: You will be more willing to shoot in unusual situations.
