After teasing something new a few days ago, Sony has expanded its Alpha lineup with the announcement of the new Sony a7R VI and the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, a pairing aimed squarely at photographers and hybrid creators who demand both speed and high-resolution performance. The launch marks a significant evolution for Sony’s high-resolution R-series cameras, while also modernizing one of the company’s most popular telephoto zoom ranges.

At the heart of the a7R VI is a newly developed 66.8-megapixel stacked full-frame Exmor RS sensor paired with Sony’s updated BIONZ XR2 processor. The camera is capable of blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second with full autofocus and autoexposure tracking, positioning it as a more action-oriented model than previous R-series bodies. Sony has also included advanced AI-powered subject recognition autofocus, 8K video recording at 30p, and 4K recording up to 120p in 10-bit color.

The camera’s design focuses heavily on usability and endurance. Sony claims improved battery performance over the previous generation, along with a brighter 9.44-million-dot electronic viewfinder and illuminated camera controls for low-light operation. Other additions include dual CFexpress Type A card slots, 8.5-stop in-body image stabilization, and a redesigned customizable mode dial system.

Constant Aperture Lens

Alongside the camera, Sony unveiled the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, a premium super-telephoto zoom lens designed for wildlife, sports, and photojournalism. Unlike the older 100-400mm GM lens, the new model features a constant f/4.5 aperture throughout the zoom range, offering more consistent exposure and depth-of-field control at longer focal lengths.

The lens also introduces an internal zoom mechanism, improving balance and weather resistance while preventing the barrel extension common on many telephoto zooms. Sony says the lens delivers autofocus speeds up to three times faster than the previous generation thanks to four XD linear motors and a floating focus design. Despite its larger internal construction, the lens is intended to remain portable enough for handheld shooting in the field.
