Facebook now lets U.S. and Canada users to export photos and videos straight to Google Photos

After releasing it in Ireland in 2019, Facebook is now expanding the feature that lets you upload your photos and videos directly to Google Photos. Starting today, users in the U.S. and Canada will have this option available, which should make it faster and more convenient to transfer your data between different services.

The Data Transfer Project provides an open source library that any service can use to run and manage direct transfers on behalf of users. In the original announcement, Facebook explains more on how it works, if you want to get geeky about it. But basically, Facebook wants to make the transfer secure (ahem) so the transfer process is encrypted.

If you’d like to transfer your data to Google Photos, you should go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Transfer a Copy of Your Photos and Videos. You’ll need to verify your password to confirm that it’s you, and then you’ll get the screen where you can choose the destination. The “Choose Destination” drop-down box will appear, and you should select “Google Photos.” Facebook previously announced that here will be more options available in the future, but for now there’s still only Google Photos.
