In a dramatic rescue operation, a 29-year-old woman from India was saved after falling approximately 50 feet into a gorge while trying to take a selfie.

According to the Times of India, the woman, Nasreen Amir Kureshi from Warje, Pune, had initially planned to visit Thoseghar waterfall with her friends. However, heavy rains and winds had led the Satara administration to shut down the waterfall for tourists. The group then reportedly decided to visit Borne Ghat instead, where their adventure took a perilous turn.

Kureshi slipped and fell 50 feet into a densely vegetated gorge. Her friends quickly contacted local authorities, prompting an immediate response from the police. Local volunteers and home guards launched a swift and efficient rescue operation. Navigating through the challenging terrain, the team successfully retrieved Kureshi from the gorge.

Kureshi was promptly taken to a private hospital for treatment of her injuries. The prompt response and coordinated efforts of the rescue team were essential in finding her and taking her to safety.

The availability of smartphones and the increasing prevalence of social media platforms have contributed significantly to a surge in selfie-related accidents and deaths in recent years. It has become a growing concern due to the number of injuries and fatalities associated with it.

In 2022, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said that there were 3,747 people who died from accidental falls in 2021, a rising trend compared to data from previous years. Last year, researchers in Australia proclaimed selfie-related deaths a “public health problem.” Way back in 2018, India started proclaiming “no selfie zones” in an attempt to reduce these kinds of incidents and fatalities.

Apparently, the trend of taking selfies isn’t going anywhere. So, we must at least make sure to be aware of our surroundings when taking them. Follow the safety precautions, don’t lose yourself in the phone screen, and don’t jump over safety fences so you can take mediocre snaps. Risking your life just isn’t worth it!
