Viltrox Sony a7 V compatibility

Viltrox and Sony a7 V compatibility isn’t just a dream anymore. Some third-party lenses have reportedly been behaving quirky with the latest Sony camera, and Viltrox wasn’t an exception. But with the latest firmware update, a range of the company’s lenses is going to become compatible with the Sony a7 V.

What Was the Issue?

According to Imaging Resource, photographers and videographers who used the a7 V complained about autofocus and other issues when using some third-party lenses with the camera. Kai Wong drew the broader attention to the problem after posting a video where he tested out the Sony a7 V. He was struggling to use several third-party lenses with the camera. It just… Wasn’t working.

This bug particularly hit Chinese-made lenses, so as you can imagine – the rumors began. Some users claimed it’s not a bug, it’s a feature, accusing Sony of intentionally limiting third-party lenses on its new camera. However, Viltrox cleared the air claiming that they didn’t think it was intentional.

“Nothing we’ve seen so far suggests any intentional behavior on the camera side,” said Frank Fang, Viltrox’s US Marketing Director. “This appears to be part of the normal post-release optimization that often occurs as new camera systems are introduced.”

And this leads us to the good news: Viltrox and Sony a7 V compatibility is coming.

Which Viltrox Lenses are Compatible with the Sony a7 V

Viltrox posted on X promising compatibility of 12 of its lenses with the Sony a7 V. What’s more, they also promise to add more lenses to the list. For now, you can expect the firmware updates for these lenses to fix the Sony issue:

So, no, Sony didn’t secretly declare war on third-party lenses or Chinese lenses. This looks a lot more like the usual new camera growing pains, and Viltrox just showed up with the fix. So, if you’ve had your eyes on the a7 V but hesitated because your Viltrox glass might throw a tantrum, this firmware update could be the sign you were looking for.
