DJI’s Concept Phantom X Presents the Future of Drones

The future has never seemed less exciting.

A new video released by DJI presents the Phantom X Concept drone, including a bunch of new(ish) and (kinda) useful technology.

Claiming to “turn wide-eyed dreams of future possibilities into fact”, the Phantom X includes multi-angle shooting, artificial intelligence, obstacle avoidance and free-flight object tracking.

Enlisting help from companies and brands such as Adobe, Lexar, House of Cards and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., DJI also presents what I predict could become the next biggest PITA – drone sky painting.

Drone Maker DJI Buys ‘Strategic Minority Stake’ To Gain Hasselblad Technology

Chinese Drone manufacturer DJI and the Swedish medium format and aerial camera company announced earlier today that they have formed a ‘corporate partnership’ after DJI acquired a strategic minority stake in Hasselblad.

As DPReview points out, the reason for this move is to help DJI dominate the aerial photography market in the movie-making and surveying sectors, using Hasselblad’s technology and experience.

On the other hand Hasselblad will receive an undisclosed amount of funds, though definitely significant, to help with the development of future products other than medium format cameras.

Despite the partial acquisition, the companies will not be merging any of their businesses and say consumers will not notice any change.

When you come to think about it, up until a decade ago, photography had only one prominent battle field for us to play at: Nikon vs. Canon. bringing up the topic of which is the better brand could be a discussion topic for hours on end (and I mean real discussion when people talk, not flame wars when people hammer at the keyboard).

But as technology evolved the market was caught in a vice movement:

If you are following DJI, this will not come as a shock for you, and it is pretty much the obvious evolution in the company’s road-map. Today DJI announced that they are taking the camera off the drone and putting it in your hands. They announced the DJI Osmo.

The Osmo is an integrated device – a 4K camera permanently mounted on a 3-Axis Gimbal.

This has to be the week of DJI. After announcing their auto flight modes and a new set of drones, the company has announced a critical upgrade to their Inspire line – 2 new Micro Four Thirds cameras that can be mounted on the drones as a hardware upgrade: the Zenmuse X5 and Zenmuse X5R cameras for drones.

The cameras are capable of 4K @ 24FPS and provide 12.8 stops of dynamic range with a RAW video file (or 16MP stills). Kinda like the GH4.

When I talk to videographers who fly drones (dronists? I donno…) and the issue of DJI vs. 3D robotics comes up, the main point is always how the Solo from 3DR can do clever things autonomously while the DJIs need some babysitting.

DJI’s new firmware update closes that gap and adds some pretty clever flight modes to the company’s DJI Phantom 3 & Inspire 1. They are calling it Intelligent Flight.

DJI Is Putting Drone Development in the Hands of the Public

We are all familiar with video footage of personal drones crashing.  They’re old news.  Everyone has a drone and everyone crashes it.  The devastation is horrific.  End of story.  (See, I just saved you from watching another less-than-epic YouTube video.  I accept thank you’s in the form of hugs and chocolate.)

But, what everyone doesn’t have is the new Matrice 100 being released by DJI.  This new quadcopter sports significant improvements over previous drone models, particularly built-in sensors that keep the dang thing from crashing.  (My apologies for dashing your hopes of becoming a viral sensation.  But, hey, get smallpox, and you will literally be a viral sensation, so there is still hope.)  However, that isn’t the Matrice’s biggest innovation…

Some people love drones, others hate them. Hate them so much in fact that they can’t help themselves when they see one.

The guys over at Lucky 7 Drones say they were busy shooting instructional videos on the DJI Phantom 3 when an intoxicated, half-naked neighbor decided to put an end to their day.

“If you put that over my house I’m gonna be pissed off, you understand me?”, said the neighbor, not waiting more than a couple of seconds before ensuring the drone doesn’t go anywhere near his house.

Racing Boat Saves TV Drone at the Very Last Second

The DJI Phantom has a failsafe mode that will automatically land the drone if the remote controller’s battery runs out of juice. This is a smart feature, but not very helpful when flying over water.

In such a situation your options are to watch your drone go belly up or make a run for it, or in Tom Leogrande’s case, race a quarter mile for it.

Watch as the drone, capturing footage for a fishing TV show, gets saved and avoids becoming fish bait.

We have reported drones causing damage inadvertently by crashing into buildings or losing contact with operator, but this is the first time we are reporting a DJI phantom being used to a deliberate act of vandalism.

On Wednesday morning last week, the first large-scale drone-driven graffiti was done in one of NYC’s biggest and most prominent billboards. The billboard, featuring a huge ad of Kendall Jenner for Calvin Klein was tagged using a hacked DJI Phantom.
