The Sirui 50mm f/1.8 1.33x anamorphic lens was the talk of IFA in September and it wasn’t long before Sirui released the specs. Initially, it was rumoured to cost around €500 ($555) and be released at the end of this year. Then that price was bumped to €700 ($770) with availability in January. Now, Sirui has taken to Indiegogo to launch the lens with prices of $599 for early birds and $699 regular price.

This is probably the least expensive anamorphic lens on the market for interchangeable lens cameras. But it may be a sign of things to come if the lens’s popularity is anything to go by. With a “flexible goal” of only $5,000, there was never really any impression that this campaign is for anything other than organising pre-orders.

Sirui’s been around for a while and makes a bunch of great kit, so there’s little doubt that this lens won’t come to fruition (although it is still an IGG campaign, so backer beware and all that!). But the fact that they hit over $100K in just three hours, and are now sitting on $221K of orders with 29 days left to go shows just how in-demand such a lens is at this price point. Typically you’re talking thousands.

For a refresher, here are the specs.

  • Lens mount: Sony FE-mount, FUJIFILM X-mount, M4/3 mount

If you’re an APS-C filmmaker shooting Sony E, Fuji X or a Micro Four Thirds system, I can see this becoming one of those “must-have” lenses at this price point. Interestingly, despite there being a Micro Four Thirds variant of this lens, they don’t list the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in the compatibility chart. Also interesting is that they list the Panasonic GF series as being compatible, but not the GH series (or the G9, which recently saw a nice video upgrade).

There are still a few lenses left at the Early Bird pricing, and they’re expected to ship in February 2020. So, if you’re interested in picking one up, head on over to Indiegogo and see the campaign for yourself.
