What sounds like a worker at a conspiracy theory Web site is, in reality, the name of an Australian-based film company. Known as Mr. Negative, this site markets an eponymously labeled film stock, as well as provides film development services.

Lending more oddness to the company’s name is the absence of surnames for the co-founders of Mr. Negative. Gareth and Emma with backgrounds in furniture design and the airline industry, respectively, contributes further head scratching to the nature of the Mr. Negative photographic film business model.

One thing’s for sure, Mr. Negative generates a lot of questions. Does Mr. Negative make its own film emulsion? Is it rebranded film stock? Can Mr. Negative film be purchased in the US? For the most part, the answers are: doubtful, probably, and yes from Freestyle Photo & Imaging.

Is There Anything Positive About Mr. Negative?

At present, there are 6 color C-41 process films domestically available from Mr. Negative.

  • Daylight Robbery – Color, ISO 400, 35mm film at $19.99.
  • 700S – Color, tungsten-balanced, ISO 800, 35mm at $19.99.
  • Secret Sauce – Color, ISO 100, 35mm at $19.99.
  • Zombie – color, collaboration with FilmNeverDie, ISO 400, 35mm at $19.99.
  • Arcade – color, ISO 400, 35mm at $19.99.
  • Same Same, But Different – color, ISO 400, 35mm at $19.99.

Furthermore, three black and white film stocks can purchased directly from the company:

  • Parental Advisory – black & white, ISO 400, 35mm at $14.00.
  • Black Cat – black & white, ISO 400, 35mm at $14.00.
  • No Frills – black & white, high contrast, ISO 100, 35mm at $8.00.

Contrary to the ADOX-manufactured Leica Monopan 50 film, Mr. Negative films are DX coded for use in automatic cameras. Additionally, they are only produced in 35mm format with 36-exposure cartridges.

All of these films are currently available for purchase.

Enjoy.
