Instagram will soon tell you how much time you’re spending on the app

After Google’s new time management controls, Instagram is also launching a feature that will tell you how much time you’re spending using the app. It started with information about the new “Usage Insights” feature buried in Instagram’s code. But Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has recently confirmed it, stating that the app will, indeed, soon tell you how much time you spend scrolling through all those photos.

Jane Manchun Wong broke out the news and tweeted about it:

Instagram is testing "Usage Insights" to show the amount of time users have spent on the app

After TechCrunch reported about the new feature, Kevin Systrom confirmed that it’s true. In a later tweet, he added that Instagram is building tools that will help its community track the time they spend on the app.

We're building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional.

Systrom added that it’s important to understand how time people spend online affects them, and that “it’s the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this.”

We want to be part of the solution. I take that responsibility seriously.

Instagram has tested and implemented all sorts of new features lately. Personally, I find many of them unnecessary because they make the app to complex. But, I must admit this is a feature I actually like and I think every app needs to have it. For those who spend too much time on Instagram, seeing this time in numbers can be a wake-up call to cut down on the social media and start living a life. Although, I’m not sure Instagram would benefit if everyone did that.

So, the code reveals that we’ll soon be able to track the time we spend on Instagram, but we don’t know much about the feature. There’s no word on the time frames you’ll be able to see: will it be the time you spend daily, weekly, monthly; or the time you’ve spent on Instagram so far? Perhaps it will be all of it. We also don’t know when the “Usage Insights” feature will be launched, but I’m guessing it could be in the following few weeks.

If I still had the account, I’d be curious to know how much time I spent on it. My guess is that it wouldn’t be much, but you never know – we’re often not even aware how much time we waste.
