If you shoot film, pay attention to what you’re buying. There have been reports that fake Fujifilm 35mm film has appeared on the market. The company warns that this non-genuine film can contaminate your developer solution, which can definitely pose a big problem.

Fujifilm has issued an official warning for its customers. It reads that the fake film was spotted in Japan, but we’re not sure whether it has appeared elsewhere, too. In the official statement translated from Japanese, Fujifilm writes:

Please note that these products are packed with movie film inside the used 35mm patrone, and cannot be developed with the normal color negative film development process (CN-16, C-41). If the photo shop develops, it may contaminate the developer and it may be necessary to change the solution and to clean the rack of the developing machine, which may lead to development failure of other customers’ films. In order to avoid these risks, the shop will refuse the development of non-genuine products.

The company adds that it’s not responsible for any problems caused by fake films. It has also sent the warning notice to film developing shops and processing facilities for general purpose films.

Here’s what the fake film looks like:

Fujifilm adds that, other than the 250D, there may be other film types such as 64D, 250T, and 500T.
