Sometimes it’s impossible to realize the amount of work and energy that goes into making a single photograph. You can look at one of Alexia Sinclair’s images and recognize that it was no small production, but until you watch the behind the scenes documentary on the making of her latest photo series, Into The Gloaming, it’s really quite difficult to grasp the lengths Sinclair goes to.
Not only does she build the set from scratch, for this particular photo, she even gathers wild ivy and flowers to photograph and print onto the fabric in which she personally sews the model’s dress from.
And the photographer’s dedication pays off. What she is able to create using her imagination and own two hands is nothing short of spectacular. Her unwillingness to compromise her artistic vision has made Sinclair one of our most beloved epic photographers. Her prints typically range from $3500 through $25k, depending on how limited the edition.
Given the amount of time and expenses Sinclair and her team pours into her photos, coupled with how phenomenal the images are–their high level of collectibility comes as no surprise.
Behind The Scenes: Watch The Magic Happen
Into The Gloaming, the photo seen at the top of this article, also serves as the namesake for Sinclair’s latest photo series. At the moment, she has released only the one image, leaving us to wait on edge of our seats to experience what else the artist has in store. Though, from concept to completion, a single photo takes weeks of constant work to complete, so we’ll have to be patient.
The Castle
In the meantime, enjoy some take a closer look at Into The Gloaming in these behind the scenes photos, starting with this one of Sinclair painstakingly building a castle. She looked far and wide for a pre-constructed castle, but couldn’t find one that matched the one she was imagining, thus, like a true artist, she just built it herself.
The castle turned out perfectly:
The Gown
As mentioned before, the gown was also envisioned and sewn by the Sinclair. The floral pattern you see on the fabric was also photographed by her, after she spent a morning gathering the perfect flowers with a friend.
The Backdrop
And building the elaborate backdrop using more of her photos and mounting them on a frame which she repurposed from a past photography project:
Not one to forget her fans, Sinclair happens to be running an affordable print sale at the moment–through June 8th–where she’s selling limited edition prints for a small percentage of what they’d normally cost.
