In light of all the recent reports on Sony cameras getting hot during shooting, it is no wonder that the community is turning to self-made solutions.

And since may of those reports focus on heat coming from the overhead sun, photographer Senya Alman came up with a small camera personal roof. this roof is made from a small cold shoe adaptor, a basic swivel and a small black and white foam board (you can probably use white foam board as well).

Senya reports that this overhead protection was enough to keep the camera from overheating and that it works well with all of his setups.

An interesting discussion emerges about replacing the foamboard with a solar charger. The big pro argument is obviously the cord-free “endless” power supply. But if you do that, you have to consider the extra weight.

Either way, I can’t wait until Sony starts selling branded shade rigs for their mirrorless cameras ;)

Great idea for the solar eclipse coming up as well. Don’t forget the solar filter for your lens too!

i just swapped from canon to sony, i use it as a camera so i think they are worth the money, not the £4000 version tho. lets all be happy and use our camera. i think i could make money making watercooled units for cameras.

Why would the end user have to find solutions for “cooling” the camera?

Regardless of the brand, it’s a pretty ingenious ideia. And there’s something to be said of that solar panel. Maybe one day someone will start making some.

Innovate idea, however I feel that it’s treating the symptoms rather than the cause. What’s next? Putting a blanket over your head and the camera like a 19th century photographer? Not exactly the ‘future of photography’ you preach Sony…

I have a Sony a7rii and I shoot in the sun all the time and have never had a problem with my camera overheating. Which model is suppose to be overheating. This article makes it sound like all models. I know a few people who have the same camera as me and they haven’t had any problems either. If it’s one model then identify it instead of disparaging all the models.

Is it me or the second picture shows an A6xxx, not an A9 ? Anyway, I guess the trick is working for both. Maybe getting off the silicon cover will help cool it down too.
Anyway, I read that this was only a faulty indicator problem (for A9), so, was it ?
