In 2010, Parrot introduced the A.R.Drone, and in 2012, a new iteration of the model was released. For a while now, the company’s been a leader in wireless technology through its innovation and quality; when the A.R.Drone first released, drone photography was almost unheard of. Parrot’s had a tendency to be at the right place at the right time, and with their most recent announcement, it seems like that’s not stopping.
Looks like Samsung is bringing new cameras out faster than you can shoot a roll of 35mm film. The Korean company just announced a new entry level compact 20.3MP Mirrorless Camera – the NX3000.
Keeping in line with regular camera numbering convention (bigger model numbers = smaller cameras) the NX3000 is smaller than her bulkier NX300 bigger sister, while bigger than her tiny NX mini baby brother.
The NX3000 will be replacing the year old (already?) entry-level NX2000. And the feature list is indeed updated (as well as the color selection: black, white or brown faux-leather finish). It should be available in June 1st and estimated to cost $529 (with a 16-50mm optical image stabilized power zoom lens) or $479 (with a 20-50mm zoom lens).

Canon’s 500mm F/4 L IS II Lens is a $10,499 behemoth. It is a second generation of the 500 f/4 L glass, following a v1 stabilized unit. Both are considered top of the line lenses.
It is amazing to see that part of the production process includes manually crashing optical glass by hand. Than on the other hand, after the glass has been ground and polish it is handled with care saved for diamonds.

If you were not satisfied with the 9 hours battery solution we shared last week, Caleb Pike shares an even better solution that not only lasts more than a day of shooting HD on a DSLR, but it can also power a monitor for that day.
The solution is build around a (bit shaky) NP-F970 Battery Adapter which is compatible with Canon in via a similar adapter to the one we showed last week.

I guess a few years back this title would have made me laugh. How are those even comparable. Some were courageous enough to ask how they compare and analyze the resulting footage. And by some I mean cinematographer Alec Weinstein.
I mean the Canon 5DmkIII was used in shooting Black Swan, Captain America and House and it costs about $3500 without a lens, while the Galaxy Note 3 costs $600 and was used to shoot…. well…. cute cats and babies. It does however sports a 4K resolution.
The video is set up pretty cleverly, the lighting is not very challenging – all bright daylight; focal length has been adjusted, and shutter was matched at about 1/200th .Each shot is a few seconds, see if you can spot which shot was taken with which camera. Some are not that trivial to figure out.
I’ve been working with Guy Viner and until now I am not really sure if he is more talented or more crazy. We discussed the idea of submitting his kit to In My Bag and he came up with a brilliant concept of submitting his bag X-Rayed (that must have come from the crazy half). One of the biggest challenges with any creative production is gear management. At the start of my time as a creative, I don’t know how many times I have arrived at a location and realized a crucial part of my kit was missing. However, like most things, you only learn from your mistakes and what I have learned is that it is extremely important to create checklists and prep gear BEFORE heading out to shoot. Although it does take more time to do this, it will save you time and heartache from going out to get a shot and realizing you don’t have everything you need.
Now I must admit, my least favorite part about filmmaking is the gear prepping. It’s a fine balance between taking too much and taking not enough and this battle is unique for every job. This is especially critical when traveling. With this post, what I hope to do is talk about how to prep your kit when traveling abroad. I will use a recent project to Cuba as the case study.

The form factor is almost identical to the a77, and it looks like Sony is building on other improvements to make this camera gain market share. Mainly, it boasts a new 79 phase defection AF points with 15 of those begin cross type (will detect both horizontally and vertically).

Back when I was photographing Ontario’s largest climbing gym, astute readers might have noticed that I was using both Nikon and Canon camera bodies interchangeably, but I was triggering a set of Nikon strobes (and one studio strobe).
To be more specific, I was using a Pocket Wizard Plus X as a transmitter on a Canon 5D Mk II, a Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 transmitter on a Nikon D300, and three Nikon specific Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 receivers on my Nikon strobes (the remaining four strobes were triggered by optical slave – which just thinks bright light is bright light).
However, since Pocket Wizard Flex TT5s are brand specific – Nikon or Canon (and especially if you have ever tried this), you should be having a saaaaayyyyy whaaaaat moment right about now – because this unholy alliance won’t work out of the box.
