The new Tamron 25-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 lens is out. Meant for Sony E-mount full-frame cameras, it’s meant for you if you only want to bring one lens with you. Whether you’re capturing sweeping landscapes, street scenes, or even wildlife, this zoom ambitiously wants to do it all.
What’s New?
Compared to its predecessor, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD, this G2 version shaves a few millimeters off the wide end. That 25mm may not sound like much, but in real-world shooting, it gives you just a bit more breathing room indoors or when composing wide shots.
The G2 Tamron 25-200mm also packs updated internals, now featuring a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) motor. It’s quick, smooth, and confident, making it ideal for stills and video alike.
Image Quality and Performance
Inside the lens are 18 elements in 14 groups, including several specialized elements (LD, XLD, GM) to reduce aberrations. This gives you clean, crisp images with decent control over flare, aided by the BBAR-G2 coating. You’re still dealing with a superzoom, so it’s not going to replace a prime lens for pixel peepers, but the output holds up well for most uses.
The variable aperture (f/2.8 at 25mm, dropping to f/5.6 at 200mm) is expected for a lens this compact. You’ll get a nice shallow depth of field at the wide end, especially when shooting close. Speaking of close…
Close Focusing Distance
Tamron managed to squeeze in a minimum focus distance of just 6.3 inches at 25mm, giving you a near-macro magnification ratio of 1:1.9 (0.53x). It’s not a true macro lens, but for food shots, flowers, or travel detail photos, it can come in handy. Especially if you’re traveling and don’t want to pack too many lenses.
Handling and Build
At 575 grams, the Tamron 25-200mm lens is light enough to carry all day. Tamron also gave the G2 version a more refined finish, improved grip, and better resistance to fingerprints and scratches. Weather sealing and a fluorine coating on the front element help it survive light rain and a bit of greasy fingers.
One caveat: there’s still no optical stabilization, so you’ll rely on your camera’s IBIS if you have it. For Sony shooters with steady hands or modern bodies, this won’t be a dealbreaker, but it’s still worth mentioning.
