The new Zeiss ZX1 full frame mirrorless camera runs Lightroom CC

What is going on? It’s like everybody is jumping into the full frame mirrorless market the last month or so. Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sigma, Zenit, and now Zeiss. And while it’s all very exciting, Zeiss’ new ZX1 has one very unique feature. It actually runs Lightroom CC. Oh yes, integrated right into the camera!
So, first, it’s an integrated lens, which is interesting on a full frame mirrorless. But, there’s no lens mount (new or old) to worry about. It has an integrated Distagon 35mm f/2 T* lens, with autofocus that they say “has been perfectly matched to the 37.4 megapixel full frame sensor”. And as to who makes the sensor, they say it’s been developed in-house at Zeiss.
Despite being a fixed lens, though, (in both senses of the word) the specs don’t look too bad. And, also kinda crazy and unique, it has 512GB of internal storage.
- Sensor: Full frame 37.4MP
- ISO: 80-51,200
- Shutter speed: 1/8000 – 30sec
- Lens: Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2 T*
- Max aperture: f/2
- Min aperture: f/22
- Minimum focus distance: 30cm
- LCD: 4.34″ 1280x720px touchscreen LCD
- EVF: 0.7″ 1920x1080px OLED
- Storage: 512GB internal / External via Type-C USB
- Video: 4K UHD up to 30fps, 1080p up to 60fps
- Connectivity: 802.11b/g/n/a/ac, Bluetooth 4.1LE, USB-C 3.1, microphone, headphone & HDMI via USB-C.
- Dimensions: 142 x 93 x 46mm (+20mm lens)
- Weight: 800g (with battery)
As well as shooting the images, and being able to edit them in-camera with Lightroom CC, you can also share straight from the camera, too. Zeiss doesn’t mention any specific platforms. It just says “directly to the internet”, which could mean anything. But with 512GB of internal storage, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time to figure it out before you fill it up.
The new Zeiss ZX1 looks pretty intriguing, and it could make for a perfect walkabout or street photography camera.
The Zeiss ZX1 website, though, leaves a lot to be desired. What a horrible user experience with all those forced animations. It took me 10x as long to find the information for this post as it should have done.

But can you calibrate the screen?
ZERO card slots??? Must be worst camera ever
Zero card slots… cue triggered photogs in 3,2, 1…
Andy Heitz here ya go. All in one travel camera
I’m sure it’s cheap too. Lol
So if Lightroom CC is integrated right into it does that mean the camera crashes every 10 minutes?
Either that or the more photos you take, the slower it gets. ;)
Lightroom in camera…why?
’cause camera manufacturers have lost the plot.
I’m guessing so you have to in part, pay for the camera monthly in an ongoing manner.
Such an angular grip, is it stealth?
Im gonna need to full cover it with duct tape if Im going to the street with it
has to be the worst idea –
How much? 20K USD?
I think this is a great idea for walkabout camera, all I pretty much do is shoot, edit in lightroom and share on various platforms, to be able to do without having to wait till I got to a pc is superb..although I’m guessing it’s probably going to be out of my price range.
Is there Solitaire too? :)
And it has leaf shutter.
How much?
Happy editing on LCD screen :) Imagine future cameras with added AI. You just walk and the camera does it all :)
Future is now… Starting with Google Clips.
Seems like another kick at the Samsung NX Android based camera idea but with a FF sensor and HD this time. Like the NX, the start up time will probably suck, unless you never shut down the camera and only put it to sleep.
Interesting. Wondering how the subscription would factor into this; as it would have to be long term for users of this camera.
This is one of the ugliest cameras ever… I get shivers thinking about how alien it would feel in my hands. No thanks Zeiss, just keep making your lenses and I’ll keep using them on camera bodies that incorporate a century worth of development.
