The new FUJINON XF23mm f/2.8 R WR could be the lens that replaces all those others in your collection. Fujifilm has designed it to be practical while keeping it compact and incredibly lightweight. Hence, you can carry it easily wherever you go.

Compact, Light, and Ready for Anything

FUJINON XF23mm f/2.8 R WR is lightweight—at only 3.2 ounces, it weighs less than a typical protein bar. It’s also less than an inch thick. This allows it to fit easily in your camera bag or even stay attached to your camera all the time.

As a 24/7 travel soul, I always desire first-class image quality without the hassle of a heavy setup. It’s perfect for street photographers and travelers. I think this lens encourages you to take your camera out more often. It’s simple, compact, and ready for quick shots.

23mm = The Sweet Spot

In a Fujifilm’s APS-C system, a 23mm lens works like a 35mm lens on a full-frame camera. This focal length is versatile enough for capturing landscapes and street photography while being wide enough to avoid distortion in portraits.

Fujifilm seems to be embracing this idea of the lens as a reliable everyday option. It could be your primary lens for daily outings, a lens for B-roll video, or even a trusty backup you keep in your bag. It’s the kind of lens that doesn’t demand attention but quickly becomes your favorite choice.

The Optics Aren’t Just an Afterthought

Even though it’s small, Fuji says the FUJINON XF23mm f/2.8 R WR offers excellent image quality. It features two aspherical elements, which help minimize distortion and keep images sharp throughout the frame. This is particularly important for photographing buildings or subjects with straight lines.

Additionally, it has an 11-blade rounded aperture that creates beautiful, smooth bokeh. Although an f/2.8 maximum aperture is not an intriguing feature, its close focusing distance of just 7.9 inches allows you to achieve some lovely background blur. This aperture is also sufficient for low-light conditions if you slightly increase the ISO.

Fuji Claims Weather Resistance

Fujifilm says the FUJINON XF23mm f/2.8 is designed to withstand challenging environments. It features weather sealing, so you don’t have to worry about dust or light rain. It doesn’t mean that I’ll recommend taking it swimming. However, it seems like a reliable lens for those intense weather moments.

Additionally, it includes a manual aperture ring with a locked A-position. It is great if you enjoy adjusting your exposure manually.

Pricing and Availability

Fuji will offer the lens in black and silver for $499. However, there’s a catch—it won’t be available until December. If you can’t wait (like I can’t), your only option to get it sooner is to buy the X-E5 kit this summer, which includes the lens.

I think this lens is ideal for everyday photography and will help grow your collection over time. It’s perfect for capturing moments during walks, at cafes, on trips, or whenever the light is nice. It may not be fancy, but it will reliably do its job.

    FUJINON XF23mm f/2.8 R WR On the X-S20 body could be close to my favourite film camera combo from the 1980s… the Pentax MX with a 40mm f/2.8 loaded with ISO 400 Kodak Tri-X Pan

    I forgot to mention, I will order as a point of principle. Full frame camera owners will lust after the latest nifty 50mm prime. Until they’ve shot with a 35mm prime, they don’t know what they’re missing.
