Tamron has announced the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens for Nikon Z, expanding its f/2.8 G2 lineup. This lens is designed for photographers who work across various environments and follows the successful 17-28mm RXD model. This one goes just a bit wider, includes a few clever upgrades, and remains just as small.
Now, this is not entirely a reinvention of wide-angle zooms, but it is a significant step forward. Tamron is making things light and quick, which appears to be the order of the day. That being said, this 16-30mm iteration extends the field of view to 107°, so it would naturally suit landscape, architecture, or indeed those pursuing astrophotography with a minimal rig. A wide view like that is also wonderful for cityscapes and interiors, anything where space is a character in the shot.
The f/2.8 constant aperture persists, with good low-light performance and a creative depth-of-field choice for tight shots. The lens features a 7.5-inch minimum focusing distance. This allows for creative experimentation with foreground texture and tighter narratives in wide frames.
This VXD G2 for Nikon Z is a Tight Build, Have Tidy Autofocus, and Sensible Touches
Internally, the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is powered by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) autofocusing system. That equates to fast and quiet, welcome news to hybrid shooters grappling with stills and video. There is no stabilization, but a lot of Nikon Z bodies have IBIS anyway, so this seems a fair trade for a tight build.
And it is indeed light. The lens itself is just shy of 1 lb, with a length of about 4 inches. If you are the kind of person who likes to pack light or shoot handheld, that will make a difference to you. Here, I think a lens this size is more likely to reside on my camera just because it does not feel like something I am going to get tired of lugging around.
The body receives a few ergonomic adjustments as well. Tamron has made the grip and feel of the focus and zoom rings better, little but welcome changes for anyone who has shot in cold or fast-paced conditions. Weather sealing and fluorine coating are also added, so you won’t be babysitting your equipment when the weather turns.
Compatibility with Tamron Lens Utility software is a welcome addition here. It provides function customization and firmware updates via USB, which facilitates going to the lens being a bit more adaptable to your workflow. No shock there, just good tools.
This Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 will feel like one of those lenses that is not attempting to be a flash, instead, attempting to be practical. That is precisely what I appreciate about it. If you are a person like me who likes to be fast, shoot in fluctuating light, or have just one zoom and go, this one ticks a lot of boxes.
Price and Availability
The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 costs $929. It is currently available for preorder, with shipping expected to begin in late August.
I like it best because it walks the line between performance and portability. It does not attempt to supplant your whole kit. It simply becomes the one you find yourself reaching for most. And being real, that is perhaps the best argument a lens can make for itself.
