YouTube is killing off “Stories” to focus on Shorts and Live

YouTube is killing off a feature you probably weren’t using anyway and won’t miss. June 26th marks the death of YouTube Stories, a feature released in 2017 shortly before the company announced “Reels” – now YouTube Shorts. What made YouTube Stories different is that the videos were temporary, disappearing after a week. It also wasn’t available to users with fewer than 10,000 subscribers.

This 10K subscriber requirement almost certainly doomed YouTube Stories from the beginning. It remained in beta since its initial launch and never gained in popularity at all. In fact, I can’t recall a single time in the last six years that I’ve ever seen any of the creators I follow actually post a “Story”. Sure, there have been plenty of Shorts, but not Stories.

If you have a hard time focusing on zoom meetings or paying attention to your audience during live streams, then fear no more! Nvidia is here to save the day with the newest update to the Nvidia Broadcast software. It includes the new Eye Contact feature, which simulates eye contact with the camera when you’re looking away from it. It actually has some real-world applications besides just being distracted during virtual work meetings.

Eye Contact is currently in beta and has been introduced with Nvidia Broadcast 1.4.0. About the effect, Nvidia says, “the eyes retain their natural colour and blinks”. This is to help ensure that the effect is sold to your audience as well as possible. There’s even a disconnect feature that, if you look too far away from the camera, transitions the direction of your eyes smoothly from the simulated eyes to your real eyes, so nobody’s ever the wiser.

Popular streaming gear manufacturer, Elgato, has announced the new Stream Deck +. Like the original Stream Deck and its many variants, and as the name suggests, it’s aimed primarily at streamers, but it features abilities far beyond those needed to play your favourite game on Twitch. And now, for the first time, a Stream Deck device gets a bunch of knobs you can press and spin around for precise adjustment control.

For gamers, these knobs let you adjust things like the volume of your game vs your microphone vs your overall headphone loudness. But for people like us, using applications such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, these can offer fine control during the editing process for things like hue, saturation and brightness for colour grading, zoom or frame advance for video editing.

Rode has announced the new Rode NT-USB+, an update of the company’s popular Rode NT-USB desktop USB microphone, released in 2014. It’s designed for voiceovers, podcasting, streaming and even singers who want to capture studio-quality sound into their computer without a bunch of expensive equipment and interfaces. And it satisfies that need easily, requiring only a single USB cable directly from the microphone to your computer.

It brings “next-generation” features over the original NT-USB, with a studio-grade condenser capsule with a tight cardioid polar pattern to minimise unwanted environmental sounds. It has an ultra-low-noise, high-gain Revolution Preamp with a 24-bit 48kHz analogue-to-digital converter and internal DSP for advanced audio processing directly within the microphone itself.

YoloLiv has created a nice little lineup of all-in-one video switcher/encoder/streamer/recorder/monitor devices, starting with the original YoloBox, the YoloBox Mini and more recently, the YoloBox Pro. Now, they’ve taken that principle and applied it to the rapidly growing world of Instagram and TikTok live streaming with the new YoloLiv Instream.

The 7″ box lets you mix multiple HDMI and USB camera devices and features many of the usual features you’ve come to know from the exiting YoloBox products, such as overlays and multiviews to let you directly stream vertically to social media. And it’ll let you do it without a computer or even your smartphone.

Live streaming has become immensely popular over the last couple of years, to the point that even though many parts of the world have opened back up, it’s still a big thing. Now that a lot of the hardware is readily available, everybody wants to be at that wedding (even if they didn’t get an invite) or wants to go to that party, listen to that talk given by their hero thousands of miles away. The big problem is finding a platform that works for everybody.

Well, YoloLiv, creator of the YoloBox series of live streaming video switchers is here with their solution. YoloCast is a cloud-based service that lets you stream 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second to multiple platforms simultaneously. Do you have viewers that argue over whether they prefer to watch on YouTube, Twitch or Facebook? Well, now you can stream to them all at once.
