Well, for those of you who’ve been struggling with Blackmagic’s latest incarnation of Resolve, fear not! Blackmagic has just released the DaVinci Resolve 17 Reference Manual and it’s grown to a whopping 3,588 pages long!

It’s been a bit of a journey since the last major release of DaVinci Resolve. Resolve 16 came out almost two years ago, at NAB in April 2019. Finally, last November, Blackmagic announced that Resolve 17 was being released as a public beta, letting us get our grubby little mitts on the newest version to have a play and see what we could break.

Today, Blackmagic has announced that DaVinci Resolve 17 is now out of beta and sees its first final release. As with all new major Resolve versions, Resolve 17 offers a massive number of new features and improvements over Resolve 16. Over 300, they say, along with native support for Apple’s new M1 chips.

There’s been a lot of talk about the new Apple Silicon M1 computers, both for and against. Now that they’re starting to get into the hands of a few people and companies like Blackmagic and Adobe are starting to release software optimised for Apple’s new ARM-based systems – even if they are just betas – they’re actually starting to look quite impressive.

In this video, Alex at Learn Color Grading took Apple’s bottom-of-the-line M1 Mac Mini, costing a mere $699, and installed the latest DaVinci Resolve 17.1 Beta on it. One question he’s been asked a lot is how well it handles 8K RAW footage and, well, he was happy to play. And… Well, it does shockingly well, actually. It even manages to motion track 4K footage in real-time!

Quick off the mark, Blackmagic has today announced a new update to the DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta. The new 17.1 version adds support for Apple’s new M1-powered Macs. The new update brings all of the recently released features of the DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta to the new M1 Macs, including the new HDR grading tools, redesigned colour wheels, next-generation Fairlight engine and all the rest of it.

Literally, the only thing the new DaVinci Resolve 17.1 Beta 1 offers over DaVinci Resolve 17 is support for the M1 Macs. It’s designed to take advantage of the unified memory architecture on the M1 to increase performance on the new systems. But for those that missed the previous announcement, here is a complete list of all the changes and updates since Resolve 16.

Blackmagic Design has today announced the latest iteration of their video editing and colour grading software, DaVinci Resolve 17. The new version, which is a Public Beta, comes with “hundreds of cleanups” and a number of “powerful new features”. As with previous versions of Resolve, it combines editing, colour correction, visual effects, motion graphics and audio into a single package.

The latest update add some performance benefits, particularly with optical flow, and some fantastic features that users have been hoping would come for a long time. There are also a couple of new desktop hardware tools to help you more easily interact with the software outside of the usual keyboard and mouse.

How to smoothly edit 8K RAW timelapse in DaVinci Resolve without converting to jpg

Even though many cameras offer built-in timelapse features that automatically process your images and spit out a single mp4 file at the end of it, a lot of photographers prefer to shoot a big series of raw files, process them ourselves, and then edit them together on the desktop. It gives us a lot more control and results in better quality.

But that can be a slow and painstaking process. And most editing software isn’t built for editing such large image sequences. DaVinci Resolve, however, has a little trick up its sleeve that’ll let you edit raw image sequences with ease. And it’s all thanks to CinemaDNG support. The workflow is detailed in this video from District 7.

When you’re making your sci-fi short film, have you ever just wished you had a phone with a holographic display? Something that would let you expand the desktop outside of just the device in your hand, letting you see more information all at once?

Well, in this video, Jamie Fenn shows us how we can create exactly this type of effect using DaVinci Resolve – and he manages to do it in only 11 minutes. It’s not difficult to do, and while you may not need this exact effect, Jamie shows off a lot of the different features of Fusion and explains how they work so that you can incorporate those elements into your own content.

No matter what video editing application you use, one of the biggest pains is the speed at which your final video renders out. Even with a pretty powerful system, they can take a while, especially if you’re using high res footage with lots of effects. It turns out that Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve has a way to speed them up massively.

I recently switched to DaVinci Resolve, and so I’ve been following a few YouTubers pretty closely. One such YouTuber is Jamie Fenn, who puts out Resolve videos a couple of times a week. In this particular video, he shows us how we can optimise our settings to get some extremely fast renders in Resolve.
