DaVinci Resolve 18.5 lets you relight subjects in the edit

Blackmagic Design has officially announced DaVinci Resolve 18.5. It’s the final version of the beta first announced in April. We got to see it for ourselves at NAB 2023 in its early stages, and it already looked pretty impressive.

Now, features like AI text editing have come to all in the DaVinci Resolve 18.5 stable production release. This isn’t the only new change, but it’s the major one. It also receives the Relight tool, a bit of a Cut page overhaul, better remote monitoring and a lot more.

The headline feature in DaVinci Resolve 18.5 is AI-based text editing. It’s a fantastic feature and we were very impressed when we saw it demonstrated during NAB 2019. Here’s a quick recap on how that works.

One of the other big features of DaVinci Resolve 18.5 is its new relighting feature. This is a very powerful tool, that gives a lot of control over how you can relight or colour your scene in post, dynamically. Used in conjunction with a depth map, it’s particularly effective, as demonstrated here by Blaine Westropp.

It’s worth noting that not all of the new features are available in the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Some are for those who own the paid version of DaVinci Resolve Studio. Still, here’s the final list of changes for DaVinci Resolve 18.5:

  • Ability to clear in-out ranges for multiple clips.
  • Ability to change the starting timecode for multiple timeline selections.
  • Ability to reorder favorites in media storage.
  • Ability to clear recent media history in the source viewer.

Despite some new features requiring the paid version of DaVinci Resolve Studio, it’s well worth updating if you’re still on version 18 of the free version. I’ve upgraded both of my laptops, and I’ve seen noticeable performance improvements so far.

And if you want those paid version features, they’re also well worth it. One price, one time, free updates with all the newest features forever. No monthly subscriptions to lock you in for the rest of your life. A license also covers you for two computers. So, you can have it installed on both your main editing desktop and a laptop for editing on the go.
