It’s not every day that you manage to photograph a selfie with not just one, but two types of unusual night sky phenomena. That is exactly what happened when Brazilian photographer Alexandre Correia captured this incredible image that includes both the aurora borealis and light pillars.

Correia captured the image near Kautokeino in the far northern part of Norway in early February. The image was captured in a single exposure and it was truly a once in a lifetime image, and he even managed to include himself.

How and why I captured this unique 2022 aurora borealis photograph

I am Virgil Reglioni, 33 years old. From France. I have spent the last six winters working as an Outdoor Nature guide and aurora photographer in the Arctic. After discovering Lapland, Finland, for the first time in 2016, I witnessed my first Northern lights and got hooked with night photography and especially the auroras. This unique niche of photography has now become my signature.

I simply adore exploring and finding new places hard to access in deep valleys or mountain tops. I aim to catch the “never seen before” aurora photographs. To me, this is a key aspect of my photography; The unseen. I want to capture the Northern Light in a way we never see it, to be able to enhance its uniqueness and spontaneity.

For an Australian mechanical engineer turned award-winning travel and landscape photographer, this dream became a reality in July 2020.

The Northern Lights are on many people’s bucket lists. The celestial phenomenon occurs in the upper levels of our atmosphere. We’ve long sought explanations for these beautiful lights, and extensive research has come up with many answers. We thought we had it all covered until something strange happened. Recently, in Finland, a scientist discovered a new type of Aurora.

Each Aurora we see has a classification, it makes it easier to describe. For example,  these ripples and waves of light got a cool-sounding label like ‘corona’, which describes an Aurora straight above us. The one that appears as if it’s falling straight down. This new observation, labelled ‘dunes,’ was discovered by citizen-scientist Pirjo Koski and her team in Finland.
