If you’ve been reading the DIYP for any length of time, you know that we love jibs. We love them because they provide an easy way to get high production value. Our last few jibs were the kind of jibs you make by going to home depot and spending an afternoon of screwing, bolting and hacking at pieces of metal.

On the other hand we never show the really high end jibs as those can be really expensive.

How to make a (sort of) DIY JibONE camera jib

The recently announced Edelkrone JibONE looks like a fantastic bit of kit. It’s not terribly unreasonably priced at $999 for what it offers, but once you add the motorised head and other doohickies, it can quickly run into several thousand. Filmmaker and YouTuber Chadwin Smith decided to have a go at making his own version of the JibONE.

The video’s called I built my own Edelkrone JibONE for free! and, well, it sort of is, but not really. The setup uses a motorised camera gimbal, so if you don’t already own one of those, then it’s not free. But it’s an interesting option for those who already have the kit shown in the video, but don’t want to go to the expense of the JibONE.

I see a lot of jibs, sliders, cranes and other doohickies appear across my screen as new gear is announced. Other than the ridiculous ones they use in Hollywood, not many of them grab my attention. But Edelkrone’s new JibONE certainly has. On first glance, it looks much like any other mini-jib for your camera, except that it has Edelkrone written on it. But this one also has built-in motors and can be controlled via your phone.

During NAB 2023, Blackmagic Design announced the new DaVinci Resolve 18.5 Public Beta. Building on what is already a very solid video editing platform, Blackmagic – like just about everybody else – is jumping on AI to help improve and speed up the editing workflow. Probably the biggest new feature in the Resolve 18.5 Beta is AI-powered speech recognition and subtitle generation, with text-based editing.

The complete notes for the new DaVinci Resolve 18.5 beta are listed below, but other highlight features include a new standalone proxy generator application, timeline improvements in the Cut page, improved Media page organisation, more GPU acceleration in the Fusion page, AI-based scene relighting, more colour tools and improved audio tools in Fairlight. We spoke with Simon Hall on the Blackmagic stand to find out more.

A Portable DIY Travel Jib / Shoulder Rig

When I get asked what’s the first thing an HD shooter should get to boost production value, I usually say a slider. But things are changing and light weight jibs are starting to emerge and take the spot of the first thing you may wanna buy for added production value.

DSLR devices makes the MK4 for about $350 and Zolinger makes the coveted ZP1800 for $750. Both would be a good start in the jib world. Chad Bredahl made a DIY jib – The RotoRig – that is not only travel friendly, but also doubles as a shoulder rig and a hand held jib. (which used with the IS-enabled 18-55 Canon kit lens is way more stable that what I would have thought possible).

To make his point Chad made a short movie made entirely with jib/shoulder rig shots using the RotoRig.[Read More…]

Edelkrone has announced its successor to the Edelkrone JibONE, announced in 2020. No, it’s not the JibTWO, it’s the JibONE V2. It offers all of the features of the original. In fact, according to the specs, it’s pretty much identical. It’s the same size, the same weight, has the same mounting options, same load capacity, same camera travel, same speeds, same power inputs and power consumption, same everything.

But it does have some new features, too. It comes with better wireless connectivity with a longer range, improved power management with auto power-off, an information screen with instant feedback for the user to see what it’s doing and can be fully wired when you’re shooting somewhere with a lot of interference. And right now, there’s a $300 launch discount that makes it cheaper than the original.

A $25 DIY Micro Jib

As we start getting into video production in DIYP (see our steel wool tutorial) I am constantly amazed with the production quality that can be brought to ghetto productions like ours.

I anticipate that as video gets bigger and bigger, small productions will have higher and higher production value, even if made at home with a limited budget.

One of the ways to increase production value is by using a jib (or a crane). A jib allows for a wide range moving shots, and after getting a slider, this will probably be your next piece of gear.

How to colour grade your images with intent

Colour grading tends to specifically refer to the colouring of video and in photography, we often refer to this as colour toning, but whatever you’re happier calling it, this process of making a conscious decision to apply a specific colour-look to an image in post-production is an incredibly powerful tool.

Build A Jib From 5 Pieces of Scrap

If you are doing any videography, a jib (or a crane) is probably the third piece of gear you will buy (after a camera and a slider).

Jibs can bring huge production value to your videos. See this tutorial by J. P. Morgan for example. Alas they don’t come cheap. A small starters jib will set you back about $270 and a production monster like this one will be about a left kidney.

I just wish someone will have plans for a small and affordable crane. Lucky me you. Videographer Dan Colvin from Unitips has a tutorial just like this.[Read More…]
