Just last week, those based in the US and South America witnessed a total lunar eclipse, the last one until 2025. Many photographers took the opportunity for some great shots, and Jason De Freitas took it to the next level. He shot the entire eclipse on 35mm film. And then – he developed it and turned the photos into an epic timelapse.
Jason took the photos over a period of 4 hours. He ended up spending five rolls of film, with 180 photos for his timelapse video. As for the gear, he used a Canon EOS 620 loaded with Fujifilm Provia 100f. He mounted it on a Celestron EdgeHD 8″ telescope with a SkyWatcher Neq-6 mount. As for the shutter speed, Jason went between 1/250 s and 10 seconds, using the longest exposure during totality. While developing the film, he pushed it by two stops.
Perhaps you remember Jason for his Milky Way timelapse, also shot on film. If you’re up for some more splendid film photography and timelapse videos, head over to his website, Instagram, and YouTube channel.
