It turns out that the leaked photos of the “Phantom 5” are actually of custom-made Phantom 4 Pros. DJI specifically designed the drones for an “enterprise client.” And according to DPreview, this isn’t unusual for the company to do at all.
Technically, most of the features you see in the photos including the interchangeable lenses, are real. The thing is, they’re still Phantom 4’s. DJI even confirmed it themselves. And regarding the alleged leaker OsitaLV‘s sketches? Well, he apparently just likes drawing stuff (as you can see on his Twitter account) to help explain certain elements better. However, I don’t think he intended to deceive us at all. If you see a Phantom drone unlike anything you’ve seen before, you’d also be prone to assume all sorts of things. After all, the drones he found were indeed quite unique since they’re customized.
Honestly, I feel quite relieved to know that the leak photos I saw weren’t the Phantom 5. I have to admit that the new Phantom’s design disappointed me when I first saw it. After seeing the Mavic Pro‘s wild engineering feats, I expected more from the new drone. I imagined it to be sleeker, portable, and more futuristic-looking. Who knows, those are probably precisely what DJI’s going after.
According to DPReview, DJI is still working on the Phantom 5. I suppose it’s just a matter of time until we see real photos of it. I certainly hope the design’s not going to be a rehash of the past four Phantom drones. It’s starting to get a little outdated, don’t you think?
