Paul McCartney announces new Beatles photo book that includes never before seen images

Former Beatle Paul McCartney has announced the release of his new photo book titled “1964: Eyes Of The Storm“. The book contains 275 images that have never been seen by the public before and was taken entirely by the musician himself.

The project takes a look back at the few months spanning the end of 1963 and the start of 1964 when the Beatles were taking off in both the UK and the USA. The images offer an intimate glimpse behind the scenes of what was then the world’s biggest pop band.

The idea for “1964: Eyes Of The Storm” came about back in 2020 when “an extraordinary trove of nearly a thousand photographs taken by Paul McCartney on a 35mm camera was re-discovered in his archive”, a press release says.

The book follows the band’s tour around the cities of Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami. It depicts a very personal point of view of what it was like then to be one of the ‘Fab Four’. At times, it must have been plain bizarre as Beatle-mania took hold across the planet.

Anyone who rediscovers a personal relic or family treasure is instantly flooded with memories and emotions, which then trigger associations buried in the haze of time. This was exactly my experience in seeing these photos, all taken over an intense three-month period of travel, culminating in February 1964. It was a wonderful sensation to be plunged right back.

Of course, musicians and photography often go hand in hand. Perhaps it’s the combination of being both creative and having time on your hands traveling. DIYP has showcased several musicians-turned-photographers, and nope, it’s not just Bryan Adams!

McCartney’s book accompanies an exhibition of the photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London from June 28th to October 1st, 2023. The book is available for preorder and will be released in June 2023.
